What are the steps involved in getting your Canadian Authority?

I have hired a service to do some of this for me, Permicom Permits Services Inc. They are very helpful and friendly on the phone and follow up on what they say quickly. On Monday or Tuesday I might have more detailed information.

Quebec and Ontario seem to be the Provinces that have all the requirements. I have all the applications required.

As I recall, for the other Provinces and Territories there is nothing special you have to do, with the exception of something about insurance for British Columbia and the trip permits you buy for the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Customs paperwork is a whole different animal. You need your Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC,) you get this from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association for $62.00. You can do this online and I had my SCAC the next day. It is renewable annually on July 1st.

Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is required by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP.)

Pre-Arrival Processing System (PAPS,) these are stickers applied to U.S. inbound cargo paperwork to expedite your border crossing. They require your SCAC as part of the barcode. You have to have your own barcodes printed.

Pre-Arrival Review System (PARS,) for U.S. to Canada outbound freight. The Canada Border Services Agency issues you a four digit code and along with your sequential numbering system and company name forms the barcode for PARS. It is attached to the original Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) invoice for each shipment.

You can apply for much of this over the internet. As I said earier, I will have a better grasp on the specific requirements after I have gone through the process and I will post any pertinent information.

What you're doing is perfect. Other than that, simply Prorate your licence plate (tags) into whatever Provinces you plan on travelling to. And do your IFTA just as you do at home.

Please keep providing details as you learn. This is something I will do but far too many irons in fire to take this next step now.

You must send every Canadian C$1.00 for every pound of freight you bring here too. Mail it to me and I will distribute to all citizens. Honestly.

Can you tell me more about the applications and requirements for Ontario and Quebec please? What exactly does the ACE require? Can you tell me more about the PAPS stickers? Thank you...

as far as authority, just make sure you're apportioned for whatever provinces you on driving through, remember that their weights are in KG not LBS, so if you're operating at 80,000 lbs gvw you need to be at 36,287 kg gvw in the Canadian Provinces. If you have IFTA, add the mileage that you traveled in the provinces to your quarterly filing.

Customs is a whole different beast, get a good permit service to handle it and make sure to follow their instructions to the "T"
