I don't know if I'm on the right forum for this, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I knew the turbo in my truck ('07 Freightliner) was going bad. I had a TA look at it and they replaced a clamp. For a while all was well until I got out of Los Angeles, then it started acting up again; a very high whining sound coming from the engine.

I asked if I could have th eload repowered in Ripon, CA, about 65 miles from the delivery, then I would try to drive the truck to the Freightliner in French Camp (Stockton) and get the turbo replaced. After the load was repowered, I tried to go to the dealer. I made a right out of the Flying J in Ripon, then I heard the turbo emit a very high whining sound, then it disappeared. Then just a wall of white smoke enveloped around the truck.

First thought: Turbo went out. Second thought. Park it. Loves on the other side of the street. Nowhere to turn around and get back to the Flying J. I got into the Loves and got a parking spot just as the truck shut down due to low oil pressure. I got out the truck, and slipped on the step. Thank God I use "three points of contact." Otherwise, I probably would have broken my ankle.

Oil was everywhere. And a lot of it. All over the truck, the trailer, and white smoke was still coming out of the oil-covered exhaust.

Do you guys think it's the turbo? Or something more? Any info would be great and thanks in advance!

You may have blown the turbo itself, or you may have broken the oil line that feeds the turbo, and then destroyed the turbo.

did you make sure that you put the oil intake cover back on? also if it shut down to low oil, did you check it before leaving the mornin?
of course it might be the turbo but best to check with the mech.

Sounds like the turbo seal blew. Out the exhaust it goes. The cylinders are probably flooded now too.

What was the manifold pressure and pyrometer telling you leading up to this? Was there a loss in power leading up to the failure?

Smokey, yes, I made sure I had enough oil before I started to leave. I always check that before I go anywhere in the morning.

Big John, I did not lose power until I started for the Freightliner. I sat for a day and a half waiting for the repower. Could sitting that long with a bad turbo affect the turbo?

    SmokeyCowboy009 Thanks this.

same thing happened to me in a DT466 powered rental box truck except for the power loss. white smoke like crazy and a nearly empty engine. except mine all went out the exhaust and this started a fire in the muffler and tailpipe. Lucky the truck didn't burn. The turbo was replaced, no other damage done.

I don't think its any thing more than the turbo.
That "whinning" sound, is that like the screach you can make letting air out of a balloon?
That would be made by turbo boost presure excaping I geuss.
