Congrats on finishing evo 3. Are you in the flat bed fleet? Are you doing the apprentice program? What kind of truck are you going to drive? I have narrowed my companies to Rohel and TMC. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

That's great to hear, skunk. I'm counting down the minutes until school starts on Aug. 6th. I'll be running flatbeds in the Great Lakes Region - also on the Honor Program even though I left the Air Force in 1991. I just have to pay for the school, but I get to take advantage of the salary benefit.

Hopefully we'll meet on the road somewhere, sometime.

Everyone harps on that 7/7 program but something don't add up like the money part. If you get 3,000 miles@32 cpm for rookie pay, pay out 25 bucks a week for insurance besides other deductions, have to drive your POV to a dropyard, terminal or whatever within 150 miles, tax, ss, road expense because you gotta eat and buy stuff on the road, etc., etc. etc. and divide that by two, ain't much left. Not to mention slipseating because I'm particular about my truck! I'd like to feel all warm and fuzzy about a company too but unless you're retired or living with momma and daddy, that ain't bringing home the groceries. Not trying to be an ####### but trying to state the obvious as I see it.

I'm looking at Roehl with a couple of Averitt years experience under my belt but I can't eat a pat on the back either. Love hometime too but if you're gonna drive a truck, drive a truck. That's just me though, seen lots of drivers with their toe in the water but just can't bring themselves to take that big plunge. Anybody know about any other options they have for regional runs AND making some cash to boot driving a standard weekly run?

Mainly Freightliners, followed by a few Internationals,

I've seen, maybe two Volvos, but I'm not sure they were Flatbedders.

Roehl (pronounced, rail...as one of their drivers corrected me on the CB, LOL) is known as a pretty good company, overall. Averitt isn't a good company for OTR drivers but GREAT for LTL drivers. I did six months with Averitt, as an OTR driver, and that was all I could take with them. I would be 100 miles from home on Friday night (happened many times) and they would give me a load WAY out of the way from my house...and state they get you home on weekends. Averitt DOES get you home on weekends, long enough for you to sit on your own crapper, take a shower and "roll on".

The 7/7 and 7/3-4 are part time jobs. A guy I worked with just finished their orientation and ran his first load. The only complaint is the numerous daily entries into qualcomm - just the sheer volume it takes to start, run a load, and finish the day.

Wiseone- You're right, you might get your restart but that's about it. My biggy for looking around is the miles though, they ain't there. I think they're spreading their outfit too thin and have TOO many drivers and not enough loads. I want the wheels turning, not sitting and waiting for nothing. For the hours and aggrevation, the kid flipping burgers at MickeyD's is probably doing better than me. It's a crying shame!

Geargrinder-It has to be part-time because they can't be making any money. I want full-time wtih decent miles and getting in with a little more than a restart. Am I asking for too much? Does Roehl have a deal like that?

If you want fulltime, then don't look at the part time jobs. Go Regional or National. OTR trucking is a balance between money and hometime.

From all I hear, the reefer companies get you tons of miles. But, outside of Marten none have very good reputations (at least on these boards).

At some point everyone seems to dream about the Local Job. I don't know about that. I would feel like a delivery boy running local.

I sort of agree. If you want full time miles...don't gripe or look at the part time jobs. Jeesh. With the 7/7 option, you are only running basically half a years work. with the 7/3 - 7/4 option, you are running pretty much 9 months out of the year, 2 out of three weeks. The hometime plus options are just that...options. you don't need to take them at all. Some people can afford to run those and could care less about slip seating because hey...you're home a bunch.
