We live in NJ and have 3 pickup trucks;all registered as passenger vehicles. NJ lets the owner decide whether they want it registered commercial or passenger vehicle. Many of the kids that have them use them for offroading;which is not legal unless it's on your own property.California is weird;they classify fiberglass as a carcinogen when no other state does.They also require different emissions standards on engines and spark arresters on weedwackers,backpack blowers etc. The first thing I do when I buy a 2 stroke piece of equipment is take out the spark arrester because they have to be cleaned often;when the exhaust gums up the screen.The lawmakers in California must be real nut jobs.

 

No, California does not require pickups to be registered as CMVs. My mom's F150 is registered as a passenger car.

You may register it as CMV if you wish too. But hauling yard clippings down to the local compost center (the things you'll find in California) does not qualify as it being used commercially.

Maybe, maybe not. But if you don't have the funds for a lawyer to challenge, what are you going to do? I don't think there is a State law preventing counties and cities being more draconian than the State and, since the State gets a cut of whatever fines are imposed, I can't imagine that the State would institute such a law anyway.
