Is it legal to use elogs and still run a paper log book as well? Paper as a back up, Not to mention it gives me something to prove experience and proof for per-Diem at the end of the year.
If not what is the regulation that limits it.

I would have to research that in the FMCSA manual. I do know when my company went on Peoplenet, the safety department told us to keep one log book as a back up, but that it was agaist company policy to use them both at anytime. Also if the Peoplenet went down, complete the whole 24 hours in the book and the next day after returning the computer remove one of the copies and include it with the manifest.

Are you talking about jumping back and forth between the 2?
-
you can just print the elogs at the end of the year for tax purposes.
-
No, it's not legal.
You can only have 1 log at all times. Unless I misread the FMCSA, but it clearly states that in my bible. I'll find the exact number I read this at in a few minutes. -

If you are on QualCom they have a website where you can download PDF files of your logs. I make a habit of doing it periodically.
I do it monthly for tax purposes and occasionally at other times so I have a back up of my logs in case the system goes down. In that case you have to switch to paper. Having that PDF file makes getting the past 7 days much easier.Dave_AL Thanks this. -

I think every one is missing the main point here, electronic logs are prone to problems. Its a computer program and depends on verification with gps, and sattilite, wifi ,and cellular link. any of these have a hicup and your e-log is incorrect.
I run a paper log along with my e-log just for back up and also because I slip seat between two trucks, one truck has e-logs and the other dosent. As for fmcsa legal Im not sure they have made a policy on this yet and really any dot officer or state tropper is gonna look at the e-log and compare it to the paper log and see that they are practically the same except one logs by the minute and paper is quarterly.
