Newbie, first truck oil change

Always use the lowest plug- you're changing out the oil so get it ALL out.

When I do D-I-Y oil changes, I put the used oil back into the gallon jugs that the new oil came in then add a gallon to the fuel tanks every other fuel fill up. Turns the fuel black, but it lubes the injectors and adds 11 gallons of usable fuel to the tanks.

Just be sure not to include engine oil in your fuel that came out of your oil filters, dispose of those filters and the oil that's in them separately- the soot and junk that you pour out of the oil filters will clog your fuel filter.

It's all hydrocarbons, it'll work unless you have a truck that uses DPF. Used oil in the fuel might clog up the exhaust particulate filter faster.

 

Thats not a good idea at all. I've heard of new oil, or trans fluid. Your changing dirty, contaminated oil for a reason. It's dirty and contaminated. Then you intentionally put it into your fuel system, thru filters and injectors?

 

Yup- burns it all off. No oil disposal fees. Several National OTR companies burn used oil in their fuel.

 

I have oil analysis done on most of the equipment around hear, and generally change oil anywhere from 100 to 200hrs depending on weather its synthetic or not. Looking at the analysis there is no way I would even dream about running that crap threw an engine.

Mind you, I have a storage tank for used oil that holds 1000gal, and I get paid by the recyclers when they come to empty the tank. 2-300 bucks every now and again is always nice to have.

 

I would have to disagree with #11. Your level will of course be lower because starting the motor sent all your oil to the top. If your motor calls for 10 gals, then use 10gals. If you add 10 gals, then start, shut off recheck, and then add more to the full mark, you will have over filled it.

What your doing is leting the oil filters get full and the toping it off. I mean I've only done a few Hundred oil changes on a few houndred cars/trucks.....i wouldnt know what im talking about or anything

i use shell rotella,every 20,000km,always use a cat oil filter,fleetgaurd fuel filters,1.4 million km so far so good

 

Sorry Dave, KWForage said he had a CAT and most CAT's have two sumps, if you only drain the lower one you leave at least a gallon in the pan.
I'm with you though on the drain oil, gallon or two per tank has never hurt a thing for me.
