I am currently in the process of changing careers from law enforcement to trucking. I have applied with Watkins Shepard and will hopefully be attending their school in August or Sept. I am very excited about the change but a little apprehensive. I have read the term "washed out" in relation to training several times throughout various posts. What kinds of things will get you "washed out" of training?
What will "wash you out"?

Drinking or drugs while training is #1 not showing up for classes on time #2, and of course the least common is lack of ability, it is extremely rare but it does sometimes happen. Not EVERY one can do this and its much better to find that out in a controlled environment.
-
in addition to the already mentioned, financial shortcomings to pay your balance. if you go with a company school, they will contract to take it out of your future pay. also, failing a DOT physical. if you have medical issues and prescription drugs, check out fmcsa.gov for disqualifying info. finally, not taking the training seriously can get you failed on permit tests, written tests, and road tests. the pre trip covers 360+ items, and u gotta know em!

hiding issues during your pre-hire, when discovered, will get you sent home. DUI? Criminal History? Serious traffic violations? (speeding over 15mph, reckless driving conviction, rear-end accident) Previous employment difficulties? Health issues?(diabetes, vision, blood pressure) Drug use?(I had to delay entry into driving school because CR England would not accept my dentists note explaining I had just received a codeine based pain killer after a tooth extraction).

I didn't understand they way you wrote that. Will dui's over 20 years old and 15 miles over the speed limit tickets more than 10 years old disqualitfy you with Most of the Good companies; or will hiding these facts more importantly disqualify you?
-
no the dui and ticket is past the limit. most go back as far as 7 years some just do 5. it all depends on your age how far they go back me personally they go back 7. -
The hiding will get you into trouble. Disclose everything. My boyfriend was able to get his 20 year old DUI off his record, but the other one was 2 months shy of the 13 year requirement to remove it from his record. He thought about waiting so he'd have a clean record, but decided against it after talking to many people.

Thanks Peeping Tom, perussing through the boards gets me excited some times. I should get what I can expunged when possible to keep the HR jackels down. Sometimes, its almost easy to imagine them saying, "If I can just catch a qualified candidate in a lie, then I can prove my existance from reading a report and entrapping the good candidate"
Company value-detracters with goals not parallel to the organization really burn me up as a waste of energy (a good answer to an interview question of what people do you least get along with in your last company, lol). -
no prob, just be honest and expect questions from them. heck would you really want to work for a company that didn't ask questions ? if they didn't then it may mean they aren't all that good and you would be wasting your time. -
Ddog : sorry, those items are important ones that need to be disclosed up front but they are not neccessarily disqualifying events. You want to make sure your recruiter knows you are on the up and up and can discuss any problems - company safety departments are all different. Some may allow something that occured once in the last 3 years, while another may give you two violations in 5 years. Others may simply shut the door on your application when they see something specific that they don't allow under any circumstance.
Honesty is the best policy as the saying goes.
