I worked for a bank for 9 years and got laid off. Went into trucking, was a company driver for 13 months then bought my own truck. You can do whatever you like just set you mind and go for it. Trucking is great for people who are self motivated and take pride in what they do no matter the conditions or circumstance.

I worked in the FLorida Prison system for 15 years as well as worked the streets for 1 year. Best I ever made in LE is $42k a year. Is it possible to find an agency with better pay, yes. Is it easy to make due while waiting out a 6 month to 1 year hiring process, no.

Good friend of mine was a NYC police officer. She told me that she got paid so little that she started going on "the take". Then she found out that pretty much the majority of NYC's Finest were doing the exact same thing and it was pretty much "accepted" but kept on the downlow. Her conscience finally made her quit after about five years of that nonsense. She still feels guilty about it.

Hey everyone haven't posted on this for awhile, but I just started my last year of school so I will be finishing school for sure, and at the moment I am leaning towards trucking after, not as a last resort but I've lived in California my whole life, and if I go straight to being a cop here I won't get to be able to get out there and see the country and learn from new experiences. I just turned 21 last weekend so now the only thing I have to wait for is finishing school, which I should be done in May.

I congratulate you on your fortitude towards finishing your schooling, whether you use it or not.

OK, seriously, I'm glad to see you are going to complete your schooling! -
I don't think that education is ever wasted. You can lose everything else, but noone can take away what is in your head. Some people may never utilize their degree if they go into this business. You don't have to get a college degree to be successful, but it is usually a great asset in most professions. I don't think that everyone should attend college. A good vocational school might be more suited to some. I usually encourage most people to pursue their education. One should never stop learning.

P.S. If you can get on with Wal-Mart you can make over 100k and after 3 Million safe miles you can pick out your own truck from whatever make and color you want with the options you want and they will buy it for you. -
Good stuff, cycles!
BTW, those with a degree, or who are getting ready to finish a degree, take a look around at all of the college grads from two years ago living with their parents (nothing wrong with that) who can't find a job. A college degree doesn't mean much of squat these days, unless you are a law student, doctor, or engineer, or are going for a commission in the military.
I'm not trucking right now, not even using my degree, but one of the marketing companies I work with was started by a guy who dropped out of school in the 10th grade to be a plumbers assistant. Got into the Insurance game and is now a millionaire. -
I've known quite a few folks with law enforcement degrees and never went to work in that field. Still... having a college degree will open all kinds of doors no matter what jobs you apply for. I have a BBA and MBA... yet have mostly worked shipping / receiving for the past 20 years. At several companies I've worked for I've had high level corporate managers look me up on the docks to consult about problems they couldn't figure out themselves. I've ran entire manufacturing plants single handed from the seat of a forklift when nobody in corporate was available for weeks at a time. Being "officially" corporate just isn't for me... but having a degree has helped me earn trust and respect. I know I would go absolutely crazy having to sit at a desk all day.
