Personally, I vary my seat height; but would never run "on the floor" because it would kill my knees. Back when I was 21 I had both kneecaps broken in two plus damage to the joints. Nowadays if I sit in an uncomfortable position that puts pressure on them it hurts like hell.
Something that the "long shifter" folks might think about is the effect of that "extra leverage" on the shift forks and bearings etc as the stick vibrates as you're going down the road.
Building a "custom stick" is child's play to anyone who has worked with iron, done several of em my ownself. The expensive part is the chroming, etc.Injun Thanks this. -
Same here. Was in a car with with my friend that rolled his car I was in back seat and my legs went out back window. Right knee exploded when the wooden round post on the side of the highways thats wrapped in barb wire skimed it on side tore out a nice change of meat to left femur bone came out of my leg when the the car landed on it when we rolled also tore out a nice chunk of meet. Also got a piece of titanium from my hip to my knee cause their was 2 inches of bone missing. Luckly didn't rip a artary cause I was their for almost a hour before fire department came and cut me free out of that twisted mess. All that cause he was driving to fast on a snow covered road and I fell asleep in the back seat.
I like to sit low with the low ride seat but still enough air in to to absorb bumbs. Then have my seat back so i can stretch my legs straight so I don't have to have them bent. When I pull into city I'll pump it up a little and pull it up just incase have to grab the clutch or be on the brake. -
Don't get me wrong, I like doing everything I can myself but sometimes I factor in time and cost getting the recources to do so. It's not like your gonna be making shifters every week so the resources you purchased to make that one shifter will never pay itself off.
Tools will pay them self of if you work on your truck, fix and repair and do your own pm services, adjust your own slack adjusters, tighten your own belts on your truck and reffer if you don't have a self adjusting tensioner. That im all for cause your tool will pay themselves off. -
Just like the drivers that like to hold their shifters driving down the road or after they down shift going up a hill You know how much more stress you putting on those bearings and shift forks. Then some of them wonder why their gears go in sloppy or have so much play in their stick. Let the stick do it's work when it's in gear.
Look at your shifter next time it's in gear and your in gear. Look at how much it moves by itself when you press on the accelerator and and let go of it. It moves a fair amount. Now imagine when your holding it, how much more stress you putting on it.
Just some food for thought. Use your arm rests if you have them that's what they their for.okiedokie Thanks this. -
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm!! I wonder if these long sticks aren;t just another safety feature designed by a truck driver, you know, like a rollover bar protection?????

AH..... I didn't even consider any ill effects of having too long of a stick, with that extra weight and leverage and all.
