I have trouble getting into 10th gear when I'm driving thru the truck stop since my jake brake has to stay on at all times...especially at 3 A.M.

Tiredness doesn't affect shifting, just like in your car (assuming you have a stick shift).

I usually used the jake when shifting, it allowed faster shifts to be made. Like everything else you had to learn how to do it correctly. When done right its music to your ears! [HINT] you have to use a little clutch to disengauge the jake after pulling the rpm down. you don't have to push the clutch all the way down, just enough to disengauge the jake! [another hint] if you are trying to float a gear, then turn the jake off or you will just look STUPID!! Floating gears may seem way cool to you newbe's, but to an ole hand like me, Its not!! When trucking you have to become one with the truck, your entire body, mind, soul, and senses need to be atuned to the job. If not your an accident waiting to happen! Save the gear floating for showing off to someone who is easy to impress. Now go do your job, and Happy trails!
