Yeah, we get detention after 2 hours, and it's at $10/ hr.

But, detention only applies to shippers and consignees. They are penalized for making you wait more than 2 hours (Early doesn't count, naturally, and if you're late, you waive rights to detention.)

But, what Keith is dealing with, I believe, is that he's not under any dispatch. Just waitin' for someone to get around to him. Then, he's working under "Layover" rules. which are, for Roehl, he'll get paid, $60 dollars, if he goes for 24 hours without a dispatch. Which means, you can sit for 23 hours, and thent they can give you a 200 mile run, and you're out of luck.

The usual. They seem more interested in making sure your logs are *legal* as opposed to *accurate*

the worst part, is that I get yelled at for log problems that happened a month ago. that's how long it takes to get back to me.

I do get the impression, from time-to-time, that their mantra of "Log it, as you do it!" is closer to "Log is as you do it, unless you're doing it wrong"

a driver in the Gary terminal told me "Roehl won't whip you for your logs, but if you get the attention of the DOT, Roehl will tell them how many lashes to give you."

Yeah Roehl wants you to Log it as you do it but that could cost you miles.

    More than likely waiting.

It's always best to log it with a little "historical perspective."

Yeah, the problem is not my DSR. She is great and I love working with her. The problem seems to be with the planner most of the time. And you are right about being spoiled. Four times out of 5 I have a preplan before I am even finished with the previous load, so I am used to getting finished with one and immediately getting going on another one. That is why I was more frustrated than anything. I did ask my DSR to try and keep me out of Florida as much as possible because I do more sitting there than anywhere I have been.

The only reason I am considering leaving Roehl is because I have a friend that has bought three trucks and is running John Deere tractors and making good money. I would not have benefits with him, but I a was self-employed for 11 years before this, so I am used to providing my own. As far as companies go, Roehl is still a great company to work for.

Here is the thing about driving for a company - it is a JOB. It is not going to be rosy all the time. There are going to be negatives anywhere you work, period. But overall, Roehl has been awesome except for a few very minor snafus; most of which have been fixed. The issue with my truck will hopefully be fixed this next week. My DSR said she is bringing me to Marshfield to let their top guy look at it and see if he can figure out the problem. If he can't, she said she will get me into another truck, so we will see.

But they are still an awesome company to work for! I would still recommend them to anyone.

Is anyone getting paid salary through the Honor Program? Would like to know if it is worth it to go the salary route rather than getting paid by the mile.

yeah i get paid through the honor program, i am a flatbedder and although i don't receive any extra pay for tarping, going to canada, or anything else the pressure it takes off sitting to get unloaded or it taking sometimes hours at jobsites to get unloaded makes it worth it i usually break even or it's to my advantage when you compare miles run to mileage rate. And when winter shows up the miles will go down even more. I'm glad I took the honor program.

I'm glad to hear it darkhorse. The reason I am looking into it is I hear all of the horror stories about crappy paychecks and lousy miles and the salary option with Honor program sounds like a great option for me coming out of the Army and being used to getting paid the same thing every paycheck.

Somebody actually pays salary? Jump on that for sure.

  11. I am in the Honor program also. I am also in the apprentice program. I am drawing off my MGIBill. I get $953 a month from the VA and do not have to do anything to get it besides be in the program and drive. Roehl does all the paperwork each month and the VA deposits the money into my bank account. We got it this week. That money is tax free also. I like being on the salary because being new at it, I take longer than guys that have been driving for a while. I was at a consignee this past week. They told me to drop my trailer up on the hill and told me where my trailer I was picking up was. I had my trailer in the hole and was getting ready to get out of the truck and watched a truck pulling up. I did my LAP, as I was climbing back into the cab and noticed that they guy that was just driving up as I was getting out of my truck had already dropped his trailer and on his way to his other trailer. Well that is what costs you miles. The more time you spend at a shipper or consignee, they less time you will be driving. When you get paid by the mile, time is money. So while I am learning, I feel it is good to be on the salary. Talking to other drivers, the salary + VA money is more money than most of the other drivers are getting being paid by the mile anyway. This month, I am averaging 2200 miles a week. If I was getting paid by the mile, that would suck. I talked to a 7/4 7/3 guy in Ellenwood yesterday and he said that he is getting 3200 to 3500 a week normally. This past week, he only got 2200 due to a bad started and some other issues and said it was a very bad week. His bad week is my average. lol
