And all of the other night mares of drivers being put with trainers that are less knowledgable then a rock sitting on the dash board. I'm not going with a trainer, Not that I know enough to go right out and drive like the "Super Truckers" but if I watch what I'm doing and stay alert I will learn the business at my pace not anyone elses pace and not making them money while I'm making peanuts. May has a terminal here as well. Take Care. Td.

 

I'm in the same place Watkins Shepard is #1 on my list and May is #2. You might want to PM trucker Steve or read the post he posted for me about may. They both seem like great companies.

I cannot speak for your school, however, many schools receive some kind of spiff for each student they send to a company. It's up to you to do your due diligence in choosing a company to go to work for. Each driver has different needs and wants. You may have three equally good companies willing to hire you, however one stands out because they meet your particular needs better. Doesn't make the other two bad.

 

Well, I might as well chime in. I'm looking for a starter company as well. It seems there is alot of posts about every company out there. I was considering Roehl. Watkins and shepard, Stevens, Crete, Schneider, Cargo, JR Schugel, LW Miller, Central Refer.... Just to name a few. Still have to complete the schooling. I found (TATC) Tooele Applied Tech Collage is a cheap 120 hr class. They are waiting for two more students before they even start the class. They have had two students on hold for several monthes. So that means a nice small class size of 4 people but I would have to wait for a fourth person to sighn up. Cost $1364.50 plus you pay for your own physical and drug screen. Not a bad price but how much education are you going to get out of a 4 week course. I talked to an instructor at the SLCC he was very helpful. He said if it was him he would read the CDL Handbook, take the test for the learners and come back there for the 160 hr finishing course. He even gave me the CDL handbook and some practise tests to take and study by. That would still keep my cost down to $1450.00 or so. Watkins Shepard requires at least a 180hr course, according to their recruiters.

I am enrolled in a 160 hour course at south west truck driver training wondering about your 180 hr minimum from your post .I am interested in driving for watkins shepard hope you could give me a little more insight.I live in tucson wich is a bit of a drive from phoenix 120 miles or so think that would be a problem for them to hire me?

 

120 miles is fine. Since that terminal is so small you'll have to take your truck home anyway so it wont be your personal vehical going back and forth anyway.


180 hours; Trucking companies and or their insurance companies will sometimes put a minimum course hours accepted as a Graduate, like Watkins Shepard Requires 180+ hours, so if your school is only 160 hours they will require you to get 20 more hours of training in order to hire you, (unless) that school is on the list that we hire (call a recruiter to check).

I will call a recruiter monday .I am really excited to make this work i just dont want to choose the wrong company straight out of the gate if you know what i mean?I am a career changing construction worker do to the economic times theres not a lot of building out there.This will work out just need to apply myself with a good attitude .Dont want to sound to nooby but i cant stop looking at forums and watching videos.Anyway drive safe and good luck!!
