I'm totally new to the biz and about to be a company driver so I'm just doing some research. When a company advertises 88% of gross to owner operators, what does that mean? 88% of what?

    Thanks!

88% of what the load pays. If the load pays $100, you get $88.

    Dragon hit it.

I would add that you also want to look to see that the truck is getting 100% of Fuel Surcharge (FSC) and any other items like detention, tarping, etc.

If you can find a company percentage program you should be looking between 20-30% depending on the type of work.

But where does the number $100 come from? How do I know how much the truck is making?

YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE TRUCK MAKES.
If your gonna be a company driver it dont mater either way what the truck makes. Unless he has you on a percent of what the truck makes.

The amout $100 comes from what the shipper is willing to pay for the load to get delivered from point A to point B. That number depends on what type of freight your hauling and the miles. I was hauling stand up coils 250 miles and the load paid $650 with $50 fsc. It all just depends on the above mentioned.

That's what the the person paying the shipping bill is being charged. If you are paid 88%, then you are paid $88 for every $100 of shipping charge, plus any fuel surcharge and accessorial charges that are covered. What the truck actually makes is very much dependent on your right foot, vehicle maintenance and other fixed costs.

ok thanks everyone... I guess I would have to know what the truck is going to make first to know if it is a good deal... georgeandson I'm starting as a company driver but doing some research to *maybe* be an o/o later. Gonna be a company driver for at least a year first.

usually you will get a rate sheet with ur paystub showing what loads you pulled during that pay week and it will show how much the load pays how mych ur percentage is and how much you got for doing that load... but remember that is gross not net. another this is if u are a company driver dont expect to get the fuel surcharge because...wekk your not paying the fuel...one last thing percentage usually ends up making u more money in the end but its risky considering ur are trusting the boss to give you honest figures..he could very easily have 2 books showing what u make and another book showing what he actually makesb
