I am having trouble deciding whether i should go with Schneider or Conway truckload? What are the pros and cons to both? I need some advice because I have to make a decision soon.

If you have to choose from those two, go Conway.
-
I don't have to choose from those 2, are there better options for a newbie out of trucking school? Those 2 seemed like good options out of school but any other input as a good company to start with would help greatly
-
On this forum there are half a dozen active threads for Con-way Truckload.
5 out of the 6 are positive, the 6th being started by a disgruntled driver.
All have good info, search them out.
If your new, cwtl has a premier training program.
It might be simply just looking at the difference in the trucks and trailers, and how they.are maintained.
I'm not a recruiter, just a lowley driver that's been with cfi/cwtl for a week or 2, maybe a little bit longer.Erik80 Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info, I did research the two and was leaning more towards conway, now with the input I think I am definately going to Conway truckload
-
My buddy just got out of their orientation and school, got with his trainer yesterday and so far loves it, said the training was by far better then he got at the local truck driving school. If all goes well with him I will be joining him there to run team, they have a very good team program too from my searches and talks with other drivers.
Good luck with whatever you deside!!! -
Unless it has gotten much better, I would say stay away. And what I'm hearing from friends still there. It's still SSDD.
I'm much happier at Schneider.
The money is as good. And the home time and communication is much better. IMO
Money ??
Does Conway still follow the old CFI rule, "You get detention, if we get paid?"
Schneider's is automatic. The computer handles it, without fail. Whether they get paid or not.
Lumper fees ?? Do those come out of your check, until they get the receipt?
Schneiders doesn't. Used to, but not anymore.
Accessibility??
Does Conway/CFI still hide dispatch on the 3rd floor, behind the glass and locked doors?
Schneider locks the door, after dispatch goes home. It's unlocked throughout the day. I can walk in and talk with mine at any time during normal business hours.
Sure the trucks are cleaner at Conway. But that doesn't make them any more dependable.
If your truck goes down. How quick can you get a loaner at Conway ? I can be rolling within a couple of hours, if my truck is going to be too long.
Personal/Family problems ?? How quick is Conway to respond to a driver and family needs.
Schneider responded to mine....immediately. No hesitation, no 20 questions.
My wife never asked me to stay at any job, before I came to Schneider. She's their biggest cheerleader now.
She absolutely hated my years with the former CFI.
Unless they've changed dramatically.......no thanks. -

Yep, we get money.
Does Conway still follow the old CFI rule, "You get detention, if we get paid?"
Nope, Enter the forms, put the in/out times on the bills, get bills signed, get paid.
Lumper fees ?? Do those come out of your check, until they get the receipt?
Lumpers, what are lumpers. Actually unless paperwork isn't being turned in a timely manner, the lumper charges aren't withheld.
Now, if you get a comcheck, that is taken out of the drivers *advance account, but the actually lumper charges aren't withheld.
Going with Transflow in Dec, so paperwork shouldn't be a issue.
19 years, never once have a issue with it.
Does Conway/CFI still hide dispatch on the 3rd floor, behind the glass and locked doors?
Ops is on the 2nd floor (never was on the 3rd), billing is on the 3rd.
Yes its behind glass, a viewing room, and yes doors are locked.
Drivers are more than welcome to visit their Fleet Managers, in fact it is encouraged.
The limited access isn't to prevent Drivers from OPS.
But with that, Fleet Managers and the rest of the Dept has a job to do, and their time is limited.
If there was not some sort of controlled access, the room would just become a visting room.
As far as Equipment, Not so much a matter of a cleaner truck, although I prefer to have new and cleaner equipment.
As far as I am concerned and have experienced, The shop guys are top notch, have never been questioned about repairs that were needed.
Now with that, the Joplin shop can be understaffed, but with a little planning, the wait times can be reduced.
Personal/Family problems ?? How quick is Conway to respond to a driver and family needs.
In any experience, again that I have had, or was personal witness to, the folks jump through hoops to help in advent of emergencies.
*At Con-way Truckload, your advanced .10 a mile, at the time of dispatch.
That is the advance account.
Paid on practical miles. -
Lumper comes out of advance account...okay. Not mine.
One thing I have learned in my years. Advance accounts are for people who can't/won't manage their money. There are exceptions (lumpers, etc) Although I am aware that some smart teams (husband & wife) run off advance accounts, while stacking their checks in the bank and not touching that money.
I realize that you are happy there. So I mean you no slight. Every company has it's fan club, including mine.
And before I go any further. I will state that Conway is NOT doing anything different than the other major companies. Other than using deceptive language to promote their pay scale.
Practical miles. Unless CONWAY changed it again when they bought out CFI. I can call you to task on that flat out lie. I was one of the first to call them (CFI) on it, when they implemented it.
Rand McNally has 4 functions when calculating mileage. And they aren't using practical "miles". They're using practical "routing".
The phrase practical miles came into accepted use with the development(ers) of PCMiler....not Rand McNally.
And the mileage ain't even close. Practical "routing" can be as much as 5% less than Practical "miles." Sure, it pays more than "zip code to zip code". But let's call it what it is, and quit misleading potential employees.
Case in point. Practical "miles", pays 25 miles more from KC, MO to Chicago, IL than Conway/CFI pays. If I want to run the miles/route they pay. I have to run Hwy 24 and 36 to Hannibal.
Practical "miles", sends you up I-35 then across.
It cuts at least 45 minutes OFF the trip, shooting up I-35 to Des Moines then across. And the fuel economy is much better, even with the additional 25 miles.
