OK guys I found great info referencing GPS, but what about downloadable maps for my laptop. Really cant get a GPS yet! Would love something to use electronically to create my route more quickly.
Yes I know how to use an atlas and will have one. Just like the electronic age!!LOL!! Seems it would be nice to put start and end location and than be able to drag and remap if needed. Like the GPS but without the need to be tracked and have all the extraneous info. Just like a paper map... just easier and quicker!!![]()

I use Microsoft Street and trips 2009. Mine came with a GPS antenna to use on my laptop, then I bought online an overlay to add on the street and trips that looks just like a Rand McNelly Motor Carrier atlas plus its show truck stops, scales low underpasses ect. With Microsoft S&T you'll have to play around with it to show you the fast/shortest truck route. Also if you leave it running with the GPS it will leave a "trail" that stays on the map.
donaddemt Thanks this. -
Thanks Pete.. Thats a good place to start!!

Streets & Trips is good, but isn't free after the trial period, try Google maps.

I used to use Delorme Street program (over 10 years) when I had a Window based laptop, but since getting my new MacBook Air, I have had pretty good results using online combination of Google maps and Mapquest. Google gives great satellite pictures of areas and detail, but doesn't have the flexibility of Mapquest in routing. I like Mapquest's function of just dragging the route to another road I want to take and comparing the distance and time, as well as being able to select the tightest route or the route that is faster. Also can select to avoid certain roads, like toll roads. Neither these online versions or the software versions are truck oriented. But I have found that the free online stuff does as much or more than any previous software version I used. I really don't miss having a laptop based routing program.
Of course, that would mean you would have to have some sort of hotspot, free wifi, or something so that you could get online when you need to. And as for the phone book features of Delorme, that is also available online for free.Last edited: Nov 19, 2011

I don't think Walmart or even Best Buy has MS Streets and Trips in their retail stores. I've been searching and can not find it. I think you need to go directly to MS for it.

Cool.. Kinda strange that their on-line doesn't list it. Most of the time you can buy stuff on-line but not in their real stores.
