That's odd, you'd think they would discount more heavily? I can get a new TND 710 with lifetime maps for $400 or even a little cheaper, but a refurb is $320 with no lifetime maps which will probably be $90 extra.
I know you're probably the furthest guy from marketing, but that's kind of crazy.

So what you're saying is that on top of bad performance, repeat performance issues, the need to work on the software yourself, etc... RM is also guilty of false advertisements, or do they just consider 1 year a lifetime?
This thread has made it alot easier to decide what product not to get. -
Why do you say you need to work on the Software yourself? Do you daily have to rewrite the code?
Bad Performance? why do you say that? Mis-routinging? If so, are you on the latest map data set where many corrections have been updated or are you on an prior map data set and see issues that have been fixed in current maps?
I have gone back on your posts and you do not post much on the Rand threads if at all. So, you are basing your information upon what other drivers post? Many drivers post, but when asked for details they are not forthcoming. So, are they just posting to post or do they have an issue? Any support thread will be mostly negitive. Human nature does not feel to report what is good, only what is bad or what they perceive to be bad.

The only difference is that it doesn't know the speed limits on the roads I want to go on. The default speed for roads it doesn't know is about 35mph. So when it calculates the arrival time, it thinks that going way out of the way is faster because it knows the speed limit is 65 over there, but thinks it's 35 over here when it actually 60. I've brought this up before and you wouldn't believe it. Now I have a way to prove it.
Take one of these units, calculate any route that you know has a long stretch of road that it doesn't know the speed limit on. No matter which way it tells you to go, go down that road. Now watch how fast your ETA drops. It thinks the speed limit on that road is around 35 and will calculate the time based on that, even if it's a 65mph state highway, and will try to avoid it. Try it.

Are there more problems with the 710 then with the 510 or is it that more of us have bought the bigger (because bigger IS better) model?

Thanks,

Guys, lifetime doesn't mean OUR lifetime...but lifetime of the UNIT.
In other words, the anticipated/expected lifetime of the specific model GPS you are buying.
All of them state this in the fine print. Even the new Garmin Dezl units that have 'lifetime maps'
- its the lifetime of the unit, which is expected to be no more than 2-3 yrs.
For example..on the Garmin Lifetime Traffic fun fine print:
Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas.Mark Kling and Dieselboss Thank this. -
*Lifetime Maps provides the original purchaser of a Rand McNally device with an annual base map update for this specific Rand McNally device, when and as such update is made available on Rand McNally websites, until the shorter of 1) the useful life of the specific Rand McNally device or 2) such time as Rand McNally no longer receives updated content from its map supplier. Internet connection and Rand McNally Dock software are required. Lifetime Maps is not transferrable to another person or another Rand McNally product. Map updates provided by the Lifetime Maps feature apply only to the same geographic map data originally included on the specific Rand McNally device at time of original purchase.
This promo is only for the 510/710.
Thanks,
Mark.
