If you are referring to the Standard Mileage Deduction, that is not allowed for this type of work.
See pub 463 page 17 Car defined. Standard Mileage is only on cars.
Car defined. For depreciation purposes, a car is any four-wheeled vehicle (including a truck or van) made primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways. Its unloaded gross vehicle weight must not be more than 6,000 pounds. A car includes any part, component, or other item physically attached to it or usually included in the purchase price.
A car does not include:
- An ambulance, hearse, or combination ambulance-hearse used directly in a business,
- A vehicle used directly in the business of transporting persons or property for pay or hire, or
- A truck or van that is a qualified nonpersonal use vehicle.

KANSAS TRANSIT said: ↑I know that a lot of guys used to use that mileage deduction with no problems, however this was in quite a while ago. I was audited in my first year, I was told by the IRS that I COULD claim my empty, non-payed miles as a deduction and I never had a problem after that.
But he still should owe no tax if he is depreciating his equipment correctly, and taking his std meal deduction expenses, writing off tags, ins, repairs, postage, supplies, maitenance, etc.
Even at 1.30PM outbound he is only GROSSING .65cpm BEFORE any expenses.
We did have guys that had to pay in, BUT they had a LOT of paid backhaul miles on Industrial equipment that typically paid about 50% more a mile than an RV.
I doubt any of you guys today are at more than a 10% backhaul rate, and I'm sure that any backhauls that you are getting are at a reduced rate, probably about 70% of line haul, how close am I?Click to expand...
I have always made a profit. The truck is written off the best it can be.
The repair expenses are low.
My cost per mile for all miles driven is .43 per mile. This is higher than normal due to a 4000 tranny job. The fuel cost is on .26 which is in the cost per mile.
Our backhauls are not at the reduced rate. -

There are a couple of companies that do this. Most screw you on the backhaul.
The other company it was 65% of full rate. -

Most of the time nothing comes back from Canada. -
As I stated before, I owned the company and dealt directly with the factories, MOST factories will not consider paying over 75% of line haul rate on a return.
So it may not be that the company is screwing anyone, it may just be that is what the rate is.
BUT, there are some pretty lowlife companies out there. -

But I tell them it cost the same for me to haul it both ways. -

Understand, best loop we ever had was we took a semi load to the dealer in Anchorage,AK. The dealer and the factory got into a pissing contest over something and the dealer(guy was a dick) refused the whole load.
We brought it all the way back to a dealer in South Dakota, that was a good paying trip. LOL
