    True story:
I was once in traffic court in Hoboken NJ in 1999, when a case came up where an ambulance got a speeding ticket. The judge said: in the 25 years he has been a judge he has NEVER even heard of Bull ^%$# like that. He asked the ambulance driver if he had his lights on, he said he did, he then asked the officer, and he said he did.. the Judge turned to the cop and said: WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU??? He said: Case dismissed and both he and the officer owe you an apology! He glared at the officer until he said: sorry (very quietly..) the judge said: I don’t think he heard you.. and made him repeat it..

I run both the Garmin and Rand truck units side by side and they cover for each other's shortcomings fairly well. Garmin tends to be more reliable (in my experience) but I've heard that they don't much care for customer input. On the other hand, you can see for yourself here how quick Rand showed up. Both my units are old first gen models that I'll probably upgrade eventually and continue running them side by side.

I also had a laptop with an aircard that died and for now my Droid X2 is covering for it with the googlemaps mobile app with sat view so I can literally see where I'm going before I get there. I do miss street view though, so I'll be getting another laptop. Or a tablet. Haven't decided yet.

I have had the TND 500 and 700 units. They are no longer in my truck

I now have a Garmin Dezl 560 LT.

I had both Rand and Garmin running side by side for a while. Garmin was hands down a better overall unit.

The Garmin unit has almost the same features as the Rand, and most are very easy to use.

Garmin also just released a new OS update for these units. added some features to the unit.

I've got the PC-Miler with a 5" screen and it gets lost more that I do. A coworker has the Rand McNalley gps and he loves it. He gets lifetime map updates with it also and that is important cause we all know the roads get changed and new one's are always being built. I've never heard of the Garmin DEZL 560 LT unit. Hmmm, will have to check that one out too. No matter which unit you get him make sure he has a trusty road atlas with him for those times when the gps unit gets lost.

    WHICH 5" PcMiler? 540 or 550?

And then, go to the "About CoPilot" screen and tell me what the rest of the line says "Data: ALK.NA....."

You can PM me rather than reply here too. I don't want to drift the thread into a PCM support call if we don't have to.

This is ''your'' town your talking about though. Try just zipping around freakin pensilvania/jersey/dc (your first visit to these lovely places) with just google maps in a semi without flashing lights getting people to let you through. You'll be ready to slit your wrists lol. Me and a friend of mine went with the rand mcnally and we both love em.

With exception of "most" truckers, people don't generally get out of our way. Truthfully though, I can usually just look at a map and give it a good once over and figure out where I'm going. I guess you can call it a gift...heck I don't know.
