It's been a constant thought on my mind for about the past month and the temptation of making enough to put a good sizable down payment on a house is extremely luring.
I've done a decent amount of research, but not quite enough to make me "comfortable" in my knowledge of what the daily threats and experiences are over there. I've watched videos, read blogs and saw pictures, but I know that can never prepare anyone for what they're about to witness firsthand.
I'm looking for advice and not the "no don't do it" or "go for it" type. I'm looking for firsthand knowledge of how these contract positions truly work. What's the hiring process? What's the orientation process? And what happens when you are in-country? As much advice and heeding I can get, I'll absorb. I just want a comfortable life for my son and I. I know I can't do that if I'm dead, but I don't plan on dying.
If any members here have done contract work in the Middle East and Afghanistan, please, by all means, I would really like to hear/read your input. Thanks.
Highly considering going to work in Afghanistan

Oh ok, just asking. You mean working there and buying a house here? Im thinking you will make almost as much in the oil fields without the hassle of having to go overseas.
Ok, sorry to interrupt. GL with that decision... -
i wouldn't travel to the middle east even for 200k a year job.
sure there are a lot of contractors over there making the big money but have you even been following the news?
iran is getting ready to go postal over there if attacked, not a good place to be at the moment. -
I would truck over there for 750k a year, no less. I know you didn't want reasons, but man that is one messed up scary place.
