perhaps later i can talk about floating gears and how to drive on some of these lease roads, you try to baby the truck and you'll get owned. Theres ways to drive while loaded and you use the liquid surge in the trailer to help you shift and propell you down the road. Floating is mandatory here at my yard, NO DOUBLE CLUTCHING.....but when youre on your own, you can do what you want. I personally use a little clutch sometimes to release torque off the drive train to help me get into gears quicker while trying to slow down mostly.
ok guys, see ya later.Last edited: Dec 14, 2011
regdawg1 and peterrumbler Thank this. -
went to san angelo today and took my wolverine boots back, they were torturing my heals, so i upgraded to some doc martens that are ###### and i also bought some fancy socks that cost about 5 bucks a pair. I really come to the conclusion that boots are gonna cost you 120 minimum, you spend less and youre gonna get screwed.
i felt like i was coming down with a cold today or the flu wich sucked but i think i been workin myself too much to the point of making myself physically ill......i'm sure glad i'm not really sick because that would suck, as far as being run down, i dont care.......i'll be hard at it tomorrow. -
No double clutching? Thats the only way i know how! My school didnt teach me how to float.. hope thats not gonna be a problem Imean im sure ill figure it out eventually but not for the test ride ###### theres always something. Im already on my way to texas!http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...w-drivers/163307-oilfield-rookie-wannabe.html

I just want to chime in too and tell you how much I appreciate this thread and your story, it has been very encouraging.
I just finished school and will be heading to TX on Sunday to visit my family for Christmas, and will probably be looking for some work while I am down there. -
personally, i dont see why they test drive a rookie out of driving school. Most schools, you still dont know jack s h i t when you get out and now you get thrown into a truck you have practically zero experience with and its a completely different animal. What do they expect from a rookie test drive? do they want to make sure you know how to turn a steeering wheel? I guess they can spot potential and who is lame but if they expect anything more from a rookie, i would think thats very unfair.....but its probably the case that they want to make sure youre not a lame a s s, so i'm sure you'll do just fine (unless youre lame lol) and just make sure that you show your are dead serious and trying HARD and i'm sure that will be good enough because i guarentee a stone cold rookie out of cdl school is not going to impress anyone with their driving skills......BUT DESIRE AND A DILLIGENT ATTITUDE IS ALL YOU NEED....just show it and you'll be fine.
by the way, i discussed some floating in your new thread.....personally myself, i learned enough about floating and stuff from watching every youtube video i could find because i didnt know s h i t coming out of cdl school. I learned just enough off of youtube to be able to float in a real truck in the matter of 15 minutes, i wasnt great at it but i could get myself down the road and i wasnt grinding the crap out of gears.
lol, when nabors told me they had 13 speeds with a splitter, i got nervous as hell but i was determined. As soon as i got off the phone, i went to youtube and mentally and physically practiced shifting gears in my computer chair lol. It really helped. -
somebody wrecked tonight at work. I was sent to haul the load out of their trailer. It was surreal. The trailer was on its side and the tractor was pointing up at a 45 degree angle. I wish i could have taken a picture of it but pics were not allowed.....plus since it was a serious moment and some of the supers and big boss were there, i made sure i made an extra good hand out there because lets face it, its not exactly funny. Nobody got hurt, i think they took a turn a little too fast or something on a lease road......like i said, this job is dangerous, theres no doubt about it. Ive personally got some of my trailer tires on the driver side off the ground and i wasnt screwing around one bit. You got a lot of weight in the trailer and its a high center of gravity and you have very uneven surfaces on some locations. I was barely going 2 miles an hour i'm sure but the ground i was coming off of was very uneven, i saw that trailer lean way over and a few of them tires come off the ground and i thought for sure i was rolling over......funny thing is though, i didnt get adrenalated or cared really, if i roll, well then, i roll......but you always learn something and even though i'll blaze a path through the fog or whatever, when it comes to the tricky situations, i am becoming more and more pro active, i'll really take my time and now i know a little more about things, fortunately, i havent had to learn the hard way and i think ive learned enough now that i can avoid those touchy situations by simply taking your time or getting out of the truck when you have the slightest doubt.
......but blazing down the road through the glaring fog and stuff, well thats pretty much straight forward and makes me the most nervous, like i said, i just hope my rig stays on the road or some other driver doesnt fall asleep and head on me into oblivion lol......its such a realistic possibility, but oh well, i love my job.
