I wouldn't ever take it to a freightliner dealer. The boss had his D60 rebuilt 5 times at KC Freightliner, and it blew on him again in Salt Lake City. It sat at the dealer there for a year. The head guy there told him if he didn't like it, sue him. So now he's gone and towed it back himself, gotten another motor, and is swapping it out himself. Useless dealers.
Turning up a Detroit, help or hinder?

I talked to 2 different O/Os at the Stoops Fremont location, and they both made sure they got their major work done there and one was driving a newer Paccar product.
That shop is well regarded, although you would probably find someone unhappy with them, you can find that anywhere. -
Higgy, just curious; did they have the valves out of the head for your first rebuild? I know a couple guys who've had valves drop shortly after dropping in a cylinder pack, only to be told "No warranty, not our fault," as it was a different cylinder. Point being, you're lucky they're covering it after dropping a valve.
As far as getting a new block, one wonders if they screwed up the counterbores when they did them? I suppose hammering those valves around could have damaged the crank... regardless, getting the long block is a good thing for you, excepting that three week wait! -

I don't think certian individuals quite know how to deal with my emotions and worries, but they are doing the best they can ( I hope). We woman ( as I am sure you know) handle stress waaayyy different. I'm not quite as laid back as I'd like to be, lets just say I'm an assertive worrier. But all they need to do is talk staight to me and answer my questions to the BEST of their ability. I do not want to have to fish information out of any one. HATE IT. If ya don't know, just say so. -
Hammer- I don't know if they took out the valves. I didn't know to ask that. But I will find out. And the Detroit Rep. couldn't find out wich part failed to cause all this grief. I was just told "it was something in the head."
I am EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR THE LONG BLOCK!!! MY head is spinning over this, I just want to get back to work. And this time, I hope I don't have to see Stoops, except for a service, for months. -
Well that engine should come with a nice long warranty, and it should also last you a long time. It seems like you take good care of your truck, so I could see another several years of use out of it for sure
As for them reusing your turbo, it may not be a good idea with what happened to the head. Just call them and ask of they are getting you a new one, in fact insist on a new one, that old one cant be any good. and also ask of they are going to blow out the charge air cooler of metal debris. -
I sure hope they take a good look at that turbo. You may want to suggest that to them.

- How much will this cost?
- Why does it need that?
- When will it be ready?
Sometimes these guys get so complacent dealing with miscellaneous fleet managers by phone that they don't know how to behave when in front of an actual customer spending their own money. -
I try to keep it mechanically sound, and I THANK STOOPS OF FREMONT, IN for all their patients, and understanding, and hard work, for over 11 years. It wasn't always easy for those people to squease me in, patch me up, replace, fix whatever so I could deliver a load. I have always had patients with their busy schedual in that shop. If they couldn't get me in, they told me how to fix it long enough to finish my run and get back to them the following day. I've been following their advise, and instructions for 11+ years I owned my 94 and never did they get it wrong.
I know it must seem like I'm going on and on, but how else can I show my appreciation and gratefulness. Being a reoccuring customer is one way, I guess, but this way, maybe I will be able to help someone in the future who just happen to break down in the area and remembers this post. That would be way cool, I think.
Being a woman doesn't always have the advantages people think it does. I have to pay money for all my repairs, I have trucker buddies, but not like the guys do. The guys call each other and they help each other with no charge. Hell, they will replace brakes, rebuild motors, weld this build that all in a week end so the truck is ready to go on monday.
Don't think I'm complaining, I'm just stating a reality. I'll earn my keep, I always have, for 22yrs and I will for 22 more.Last edited: Dec 16, 2011
