    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/topics/hos/index.htm

This link has PDF guide at the bottom the page that makes the current laws very simple. The intial post was just a very simple explanation of the basic rules for a new driver just starting out ,.... as pointed out in the first couple posts, there are few ways to alter the basic rules. Come on guys lets not confuse this basic post, let them read the very simple PDF in this link.

A 8 hour break can extend the 11/14 hour rule for those who arrive way too early to unload. Then it only allows the remaining hours of service left over on your 11/14. A minimum of two consecutive hours off duty will fulfill the 11/14 hour rule and the driver will have a new 11/14 minus the time worked after the 8 hours portion of the split. Some companies think it is easier to omit the split so that drivers always have a full 11/14 available after the required 10 hour break has been satisfied. E-logs like the one programmed into Qualcomm MCP H.O.S. do a very good job of legally managing a split sleeper. To put it simply, having a computer program do the math precisely eliminates the chances of driver goofing up. If I was still on paper, It would be a heck of a lot easier to just follow standard 11/14/70 H.O.S. and leave the 8/2 split for the experts.

    "60/70-Hour On-Duty Limit
May not drive after 60/70 hours on duty in 7/8 consecutive days. A driver may restart a 7/8 consecutive day period after taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty. "

Nothing about going "on duty, not driving" after 70.

I guess no one noticed, that it was just a quick simple response to someone who does not know anything about logging and did not want to overwhelm.

And that the poster only was interested in what these numbers were and not the rules?

If it was in E-LOGS, I don't think it should be a problem as I know a couple of friends of mine that use it when its needed and computer tells them if they legal or not. As for most companies/drivers, I would say they don't want you doing it because it is very easy to put yourself in violation if you are not EXTREMELY careful. Most drivers mess up and over drive on the opposite side of the split. Just much easier to take a 10 and be fresh.

But the 2 hours counts as on duty time . If you worked 8 hours and took an 8 hour break you have 6 left . If you work 2 , take a 2 hour break , then you only have 2 left .

Not only is the split a little confusing to drivers,

but to a few enforcement members also...........

And fighting that ticket is a real hassle in some jurisdictions.
