The man starved to death. No job, no food.
You must be familiar with us Yoopers. Our winter snow forcast, "Clear and Still".
Clear up to my ### and Still coming.Click to expand...
Oh, you blew it. I've had someone going in circles for weeks trying to find out where the Yoopers live. You spilled the beans! Oh well..
Just thought of this- do the tread depth requirements in Michigan change in the winter? In some western states some tires must have a deeper minimum tread depth when chains are in season.Click to expand... -

Forgive my ignorance, if the two center treads (adjacent) grooves are 3/32 and the two outer grooves are, lets say gone. Then I will get fined and points but not out of service.

Talk to your boss professionally and tell him not only they are unsafe, that both of your CSA scores can suffer. Then tell them to change the shocks or the new tires will wear out prematurely.
You don't fool around with steers. You also change them in pairs. It's not like you are wasting money. He can slap them on a trailer and get the rest of the usage out of them.
We're at a point where you have to stand up to what's right or your future might be at stake. If the guy is too cheap to do maintenance, you don't want to work there. -

Not too long ago, plenty of carriers had hiring freezes on for people in Michigan, Florida, and parts of New England. It's not that easy to just walk away from a job, no matter how bad, when the prospects of finding another job are slim on the ground. Also, we know nothing about the OP's previous history. He may be stuck running with the small outfit he's with due to issues that disqualify him from finding another outfit to drive for.
Since this isn't a perfect world, and since bills show up whether you work or not, we sometimes have to deal with somewhat less than ideal situations to pay the bills and keep food on the table. As I recall, you yourself spent some time in a call center to keep the wolf from the door (chuckle), didn't ya Wolf?Click to expand...volvodriver01 Thanks this. -

The left steer is showing the same pattern but about 50% less wear than the right. I pointed out that the left shock is frozen and probably the culprit.
Questions:
How many tread grooves have to be out or the 4/32 range to be bad? (I have read that only one has to be)
What fines or penalities would the DOT impose?
4 weeks newbie with small local carrier after 4 years OTR, love the routes and the hometime. What power do I have to shut the truck down till the tire is replaced ?
Need help by Monday, carrier is aware and notified of the tires and shock and still a load to go Monday. I work in alot of snow and not real excited about waiting to get resolved. TyClick to expand... -

You're best bet is to take the truck...straight to a scale house or CMV enforcement officer. Call'em if you have to. Explain the issues, show proof of communication between you and the company if possible, and let the LEO's deal with the company appropriately. You'll be protected by whistleblower laws, and the inspection will show as a random check, if the LEO's do the paperwork right.Click to expand...
To drive it to the scalehouse for inspection, you must drive on a public road...
then YOU GET A TICKET, even if written to the company, they will say YOU TOOK THE TRUCK AFTER A PT. If they refuse to fix it, walk....
That way you have s clean record, no fines...
do the above, you have a black mark, fines, and most likly fired...
You could fight it, but by the time the lawyers get it strightened out, you will be homeless, living in a box, unemployed...why stress it, get a better job. -
Much of what goes on with equipment is directly attributable to the driver and how he checks his truck. I understand there are some carriers who may not keep up equipment as they should, however, many drivers don't bother to do a proper pretrip and then notify the carrier of a problem. The carrier cannot make repairs unless the driver tells them. I would expect that most problems found during a DOT inspection are the result of the driver not doing his job and doing a good pretrip inspection. You can see drivers jump out of the sleeper and just turn the key and pull out without taking time to do a pretrip. For that reason I would like to see fines only for the driver unless the driver can show that he had discovered problems and notified his company prior to the DOT inspection. If a carrier fails to address any maintenance issues after being notified by the driver, then that is another issue.

You drive the truck, you get the ticket!
If it ain't right, don't drive it. PERIOD!
If the company says you have to, ask them what towing company they want to use.
