I took that to mean , they're paid for the 1/2 hour bobtail while on duty, then off duty driving.

Scalemaster hit it on the head exactly. Intent is everything just as DB mentioned he will interview then make a judgement call.

I will add that "short distance" is in the line pertaining to restaurants NOT term<->home. I don't think it matters if home is 1500 miles away as long as that is the True Intent.

So....You think that they will do away with it and try to tell me that I can't use a vehichle that I own to drive to the store or out to eat when I'm on a reset?

    Good luck with that!

I could see them restricting it to 50 or100 miles or so but not just telling me that I'm a prisoner at the truckstop whenever I'm on my own time....I could see a rule like that being widely ignored.

Scalemaster approved. No line 3 necessary. Will fit nice and tidy on the flatbed, and it's so light, you can just throw it back up there when you are done.

And, it even matches the truck!

    Goggles not included. :biggrin_255:

I understand why there is confusion.

My comment about 10 different answers to the same question related more to my frustration over the years on issues and questions not related to the personal conveyance.
I RARELY ever used that exemption. Heavy emphasis on rarely.

Note that the rule does not address when the driver is the motor carrier.

If the definition could be expanded to cover short distances from jackmule shippers and receivers that refuse to let you use their 10 acre parking lot, I'd be a happy, happy camper.

EDIT: in this case it would obviously need to be a very explicit distance, because of the huge potential for abuse. Say 10 miles.
