I was thinking that was his intention, with straps pulled from both sides on each end of the shaft.

Now I got winch envy. I only have 10 on each side.

A friend of mine just picked up a nice flat from a bank repo and it had 14 sliding winches on both sides. Kinda overkill.

They are wrapped that way to keep the thing from turning, that is why I have two pulling to the right and two pulling to the left.
There are also two chains across the feet of the base to assist because it's top heavy.
I have no winches on the right side of the trailer but I carry 4 portables that drop into stake pockets for situations like this.

I did this one today. 12 foot wide. Always a challenge on freshly painted machinery.

I saw something odd today, I was hauling water to a well site and they were moving the rig out, now ive done some flatbedding here and there, mostly pipe, lumber and smaller heavy equipment. The man had rig mats stacked on his flatbed, and had them chained on by wrapping his ENTIRE trailer, down underneath the frame of the flatbed up around to the top of the rig mats, where his binders were. I've never seen anyone chain completely around a flatbed. I'm positive it was'nt his slack either, there were NO hooks in his pockets and the chains went right behind the rub rail underneath his trailer....seems awfully sketchy to me.

Sounds sketchy the way your explaining it but only thing comes to mind would be the concept of pulling "into and down" on the trailer, OR he didn't want to wrap the slack on the chains and that was his way of using all the chains.
