With a lot of thinking time to myself since I went solo, there have been some things that other truckers do that I wonder if I should too. Let's hear from the "experts" on their views. I just want to be a good trucker and do what is expected as well as be kind to my fellow drivers.
1. Flashing (and not the kind you get in ts parking!) I have seen both sides discussed here. I try to remember to do it but 2 things confuse me on it. When and how? How far past my bumper should I flash and should I turn offon my lights or use high beams?
2. Wide loads. I do get over if I see them coming up the middle lane beside me on the highway/interstate but how do I handle 2 and 4 lanes? I have come acros some wide loads that will ride the shoulder in order for me to pass but I will only pass if I feel I can do it safely. I don't want to mess them up but I also don't want to create an unsafe situation. Any suggestions?
3. Thanking..I always do this if I am flashed over but I have noticed drivers thanking me even when I forget to. Should I do it always?
4. Docking...I am SLOW. But I am also new and I want to be sure I don't hit another truck or trailer so I get out and look a lot. Should I keep on even if an impatient driver pulls right up to me waiting for his door?
Some "courtesy" questions for us newbies

When backing in to a spot, there will sometimes be a hothead waiting to get by. Two options here, either let him wait or move down the aisle so he can get by. Your choice really, you might catch him on the CB and tell him to be patient.

For flashing someone over I will always turn my lights off for a tad bit, usually when they are at least a truck length ahead of me but as KB said, sometimes you dont even get a chance to flash someone and they are already back over and all you see is doors. It's not a big deal but to me high beams screams unprofessional.
Appreciate your concern about being slow and backing up but just take your time and get it right, the first try, second try, third try etc.... whatever it takes without bumping anything but the dock. If you can let someone past you without too much hassle then ok but I sure wouldnt go out of my way for an impatient driver, maybe the patient one but not the impatient one. Be safe and happy holidays to all members. -
For flashing just hit the interrupt switch or turn the headlights off then back on...........Dont use brights! They are blinding and do more damage than good.

i agree with whats already been said. Brights in a big mirror = vision imparment. During the day brights is good.
Wide Loads "i'm coming around ya oversize" usually gets a thx over the CB, which despite all the nonsense is good to have on when there is trouble ahead
Thanking is being courtious, a fading quality in the modern world (sigh)
And do your best at backing, it it takes longer that's ok, get out and look all you need. It's quicker than dealing with damage to someones rig.
Thx for asking, sounds like you are going to be a good conscientious driverPanhandle flash and buddy_bill Thank this. -
How do you calculate what size of trailer a truck can tow
