It seems to me I have been running I-68 more with my new company in the last 2 months than I ever had in the last ten years...I have been over it empty and grossed out. just seems I cant seem to get a load that DONT go through there...plus if you get off at US220 and go south for about 20 miles there is a paper company there..serious heavy loads...but I swear to God if he could flatten out that part of Maryland and all of West Va. It would be bigger than Tx..
Where does I-68 in MD rank in steep grades?

On another note here and I could be wrong.
I-68 is an "alternative" route east and west"
90% of the time I am on 68 I am usually hauling a HATMAT load and can not use the Pa TP I see many hazmat loads and LOTS of oversize loads on 68 I think it has a lot to do with that we HAVE to use 68 because we cant go through the tunnels on the PA Tp. -

you would just think they would give you more warning about that grade on 68. They have only 1 sign up i think, and it is just as your about to go down it.
I knew it was comming up, but just forgot where exactly it was. and it still kinda snuck up on me.
I was thinking the hills further west were the BIG one, but they were false alarms.
The last time i went down it, i was at 78k or so, and i was trying to not use the jake brake. I was 2 miles from the bottom and my brakes started smoking, and i even saw a few sparks.
And as this was happening this 4-wheeler was just hanging out right next to my tandems in the left lane. I'm like, hey dude! your about to be BBQ'ed! get out of there!
But after i saw that, i turned the jake on, and stopped at the top of the next hill to let em cool off.
I'm just saying they treat it like just another grade, but it's not.
P.s. That same week i went down the 7% grade on 64 that was mentioned earlier. that's no joke either. -

68 is a PITA more than being a dangerous stretch. I got lucky many times and was usually only pulling 13-17k in the box on a load I got out of Philly usually twice a week. There were still plenty of times I was fully loaded on it coming in though.
postmandav and SHC Thank this. -
IMHO it isn't so much the steepness of the grades on 68(or 79 and 77--64)in Wv and MD that is the problem--it is the constant up down s curves that keep you on your toes--you really do not have a chance to relax much across there(except for very late nights)since you are constantly going up down and around--versus many of the western routes where once you get down you have a chance to take it easy for a while--even wolf creek etc as mentioned before--once you are off(in either direction)there is a nice scenic easy ride for a while.
Just my $.02SHC Thanks this. -
Yep, I-68 is THE road that almost all of us oversize HAVE to use coming off the east coast. The only way we can run the PA pike is to be under 10' wide. This is why you'll see all of these oversized loads on I-68. And the thing that REALLY sucks is when MD sees a snowflake, all oversized loads are shut down till it's over. So don't expect to find any parking when it's snowing
