I used to haul gas in NW PA, and I remember an occasion where a vehicle was off on the shoulder of a ramp and had flares out. I stopped as soon as I saw the flares (I was still rather green as a driver- not even one year yet- so easily confused:biggrin_25517:) A highway patrol officer waved me on past, quite vigorously. I went as far as I could on the opposite shoulder without ending up in the ditch, but now every time I see flares on the road, I think about that situation.

I came up on a wreck one time the cops had flares set out in a serpentine fashion,I stopped the cop started waving me thru and I sat there shaking my head the cop came up and wanted to know what my blankety blank problem was and I replied my problem is I have 8500 gals of gasoline behind me and you want me to drive though those flares . needlessly to say they found me a different way around. :biggrin_25512:

It goes back to the basics, that time when you took your HazMat test..

I see drivers throwing cig. butts all the time while hauling tankers.

But the answer is, unless your cab is 25 ft. away from the tanker, NO.:biggrin_25513:

Not to mention the public flicking a cig. butt at you. I've even had a MN state patrol using flares get POed at me because I stopped traffic so he could move the flares that were on the Right side of the tanker. He didn't get it...

Years ago on I-5 right where the railing is in the middle of the interstate right next to the tire plant (I think it was Goodrich) on the north side a Standard truck overturned and a CHP set out his flares. If you look close you can still see the black railing where it burned for some time and it was back in the 60's.

One would think after something like that, flares would become obsolete. The reflective triangles are much safer all around. Plus, I find the triangles to be more noticeable during the daylight hours.

I flicked a cigarette out at night in front of a tanker over by Chicago & the driver told me about it on the radio...I came back with some remark like well your tank shouldnt be leaking anyhow....But in a minute I came back told him he was right & I was sorry about it..

You can smoke a pipe, just not a cigarette. Pipes smell much better too.

Source: I smoke a pipe and go through 2 pouches of Indian Chief pouch tobacco daily..
