Truckstops are safer than rest areas . There have been a couple of threads on this . Use the search .
Not having a rest area or truckstop available can be avoided by proper planning . Most truckstops sell truckstop guides . The pocketsize ones are only about $5 and some include rest area locations .
If parking elsewhere check for no truck parking signs . You could end up being towed or heavily fined .

truckstop/rest area fears are just that, fears.

and as with most fears, based on ignorance, not logic.

do what you have to do, to make yourself feel better.

Some truck stops are safer than others and generally safer than a rest area. Some rest areas are safer than others - lighting makes a big difference. Push come to shove I will park on a street near a shipper or receiver as a last resort if truck parking is allowed. Yes, there are people out there that would mean to do you harm - just like at many other places you probably have been in your life. Use common sense and you will be fine.

Yes there are people out there looking to do harm, but you are just as likely having something happen at a shopping mall as being at a truckstop or rest area. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. I try to stay away from get off/ get on ramps because of the fines you can get depending on the state and mostly because of the danger of someone running into the back of you while parked. Then your in a world of ####e..Just plan your trip and for the most part you will be fine.

I have an old school "do not disturb" door knob sign I plan to put on my windows to keep the lizards away.
