Curse of sarge referral has been broken! Was surprised to see an additional paycheck for 228.00 (net i don't talk gross pay) Payroll said it was a driver referral bonus.

Real Quick, if it was someone in here that put me in as a referral, thank you but so everyone else in here is clear, that's not the reason i post in here when i get the chance. I remember what it was like to be new and having all kinds of questions.

Also, Maverick will soon be asking all Maverick Drivers to vote for driver of the year and so everyone knows. . .IM NOT THE SARGE THAT IS UP FOR DRIVER OF THE YEAR I did meet him once that i know of, at chokeachicken, pa that place with the yellow poles and scale rails that jump right out in frnt of you like deer in the rut, completely ruining all the hard work you did lining up to pull in, back in, scale in, scale out etc. lol

Noticed alot of questions from drivers soon to be attending orientation about what to bring especially in regards to cold weather gear. In my typical "sargecastic" style, i'd have to answer that question like this. Pick a day, the colder, the better snow, ice, rain, whatever. Put on a tshirt, pair of shorts, and low top sneakers and just stand out in the weather for about an hour and a half. While you're standing there make a mental list of clothing that would make your experience much more tolerable.

Now that you've done that, ask yourself what would keep me warmer, a set of sheets? or a sleeping bag?

When you do finish orientation at Maverick or whichever company you may choose and your in your own truck, make a list of things that would come in handy to put in the truck when you get home

Alot of it is common sense folks. . . it can't be taught.

Have a safe and happy new year everyone

Sarge and I were discussing having a warm ski-mask and some ski-goggles the other day for harsh winter weather. These could come in handy in cold wind-driven snow! One would not need these items during orientation however (at least in NLR, if one were going into the Glass division afterwards in NC however, since I believe they do some outdoor training there, Glass driver trainees may want to get these items before heading out there). Also, while we were doing a large lumber tarp job last week, I mentioned how I thought having a portable work light to place maybe on top of the cab facing towards the trailer may come in real handy if you had to do that tarp job in the pitch darkness like we did (potentially dangerous). I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and they have a Bayco 500watt halogen Portable worklight that you could plug into your inverter and run an extension cord to it to the top of the cab for such an exercise. Cost around $12. Could have come in handy when our old 96' trailer had some brake freezing problems the other morning in OH too, hey Sarge?

For a portable work light. What I find works best is those little LED lights that you click on the visor of your ball cap.

Hey Sarge, have you got any advice for how to get the chain through the center of a cable spool? I have tried all sorts of things, a pole with a piece of carpet duct taped to one end. I use this to have a place for the hook to connect to. It works, most of the time, but if the hook snags the least bit, it will un-### my contraption and then, all is stuck.

    Thanks

You got that right. In 4 years maybe 2 or 3 times i could've used the ski goggles, once in iowa in the "tarping shed" or wind tunnel as it was that night. -40 with the windchill (skimask bought next day) once in cleveland where i was tarping a load of slinkies in lake effect snow storm. "Better to have and not need, than need and not have"

Best solution for the ol 96er i'm pullin is retire it but i'll use what they give me to the best of my ability. Got a 47040 lb coil on it now. 63 inches wide that dels in suffolk, va. where they unload by forklift so it had to be loaded eye to the side making it too tall to use a steel tarp (4 foot drop) so had to throw a lumber tarp (8 foot drop). After waiting 8 hours to get loaded didn't feel like fussing with the wrap around or as i call it "shirty to purty" (one side to the rubrail, one side front wrapped over the back and bungeed like there's no 2morrow.

Never loaded those but some drivers i know that have say there is something at the shipper you can used to push the hook through to the other side. OR a small length of rope but youd still need something to push it through to the other side. OR I've yet to get me another one but a piece of plastic pipe about 96" long so it can be stored w the dunnage could be used. I used it to hook a bungee to the d rings i couldn't reach from the ground. Had it for 2 years but eventually shattered and hasn't been replaced.

Where there's a will, there's a way. Think about how to do it or anything using all tools available and more often than not, you'll figure it out.

Hey Sarge, What would your advice be for a future driver who would like to start with Maverick, But feels that since Maverick runs automatics, he should probably learn how to drive a manual to gain experience? Thanks

Maverick's truck's are automatics but have a switch on the paddle used to shift that you can flip to the "manual" position and drive in manual

I don't know of any cdl schools that teach using "automatics"

If you can drive the dinosaurs most cdl schools run you can drive an "automatic"

Anytime anyone can learn something new that may be used someday i'd consider that beneficial.

To all that are reading this thread:
I wanted to put a little something on THIS THREAD specifically, because if you are reading this thread it is because you have an interest in Maverick, and you are wanting to hear advice from one of their actual TRAINING INSTRUCTORS- namely Sarge.
I am posting this because I just got out of Sarge's Truck as his student and eval'ed out to get my own truck, and thought I would lend my thoughts to this discussion so that as you read through these posts and Sarge's answers (and a few others too), you will know what at least one of his students feels.
I was very fortunate to draw Sarge as my Instructor. I was right out of CDL school, and somewhat apprehensive from the start, as this was a big career change for me. My instructor never once made me feel insecure, unsure, mad, or anything other than confident in whatever task it was that I was doing while in the Trainer Truck. For those of you reading this post with a speculative perspective on his advice (or the advice of other Maverick drivers on this or any other Maverick thread), I PROMISE YOU- this particular Driver Instructor, the few regularly-posting other Maverick Drivers such as Sewerman & Jim The Hut for example, and THE ENTIRE COMPANY OF MAVERICK TRANSPORTATION, LLC for that matter are THE REAL DEAL, and I am so extremely impressed with them all. If you are considering which company to drive for- and you are reading this thread- stop "considering"....because this is where you belong and I bet that you already know it- just like I did.

    Thanks Sarge and Sewerman!
