I carry a piece of nine wire about 10 feet long. Works great pulling straps through and chains. If you don't know what nine wire is, headed to a farm store and ask.
And best of all it's dirt cheap.

Am I wrong.....???..... if you're a newbie...........wouldn't you rather go with a trainer (and company for that matter) that would teach you on a manual trans....???? moutains...ice..etc..
I mean you just come out of school....you learned the basics how to shift....and now you go to an auto????:biggrin_25513:
So what do you do when you leave for another company...and all their trucks are manual??? Go with a trainer again...???:biggrin_25512:

not to be negative here.............just my 2 cents :biggrin_25525:

Not a bad question GTR Silver....
One who is not very confident with shifting 8,9,10+ transmissions may feel uncomfortable I imagine, but, I am not concerned myself.
Besides, I have found where I belong anyways, so the premise of your question stating WHEN I move to another company is not of my concern. Thank you.

He is right. Trucking isn't a union job. 99.999999% of newbies don't stay with their first job. (I made this statistic up, probaly close tho)lol. It's good u have a good attitude for your new job , but u also need to think about the future. U dont want to have the dear in the headlights look when u get another job and go out Otr. Well I guess there is always useless express and trams am u can fall back on( auto transmission companies). Good luck to you and best wishes.

He did go with a trainer that taught him how to shift manually. . . me. His truck is a cascadia and he can drive it in automatic if he wants to or manual as he was taught. I can only speak for how i teach any student that comes into my truck but I would feel as if i was leaving something out if the entire time a student was in the truck, they drove it in automatic.

He was a very quick study and retains information well. Should he choose to go with another company that only had manual transmissions, I'm sure he would have no problem with the transition and would do just fine. Whether or not he went out with another trainer? I'd say that would be up to the company. Even a driver with OTR experience when they come to Maverick can go out with a driver trainer if they so choose. Some i've met (both with and w/o a student in the truck) have even told me they wish they had gone out with an instructor.

just my 2 cents as well

    jxu417 Thanks this.

I think i learned to ride a bike when I was 6,perhaps younger. I haven't been on a bicycle in approximately 3 years now. I'm not in the cycling shape i used to be in and would probably not be able to go out and not miss a shift or two for the first 1/2 hour or so. The line i rode probably wouldn't be as straight as it used to be but geez. . . i wouldn't have to put the training wheels back on the thing!

If he puts in 1/4 the effort he did while in the trainer truck with me, he'll be fine. If he chooses to go with a different company that doesn't have "automatics", he'll be fine too.

Good info here with interesting discussion! You sound like a trainer I would like but we live too far apart. Looking at Maverick as a possible. I've had my Class A since 1997 but never been OTR. Thinking in this economy it might be a good time to put it to use.
