hi im new to this forum. i have an 89 pete 3406b 15sp 355 rears. i haul sheet rock from central pa to ny nj ct. 52,000 lbs. last weekend i change the 15sp out for a 13sp. i bought the 13sp from a freind who pulled it from a cabover with a 3604b. he never ran it so he couldnt tell me much about it so i had my mechanic over haul it and everything look great. i asked my mechanic about "flipping the gear" and making it a double over aqnd he told me it wouldnt be needed because the truck would run to fast and lose to much power. the truck used to run 65mph at 1525rpm. i picked it up monday morning and it now runs 65 at 1725rpm and my fuel milage has dropped. is there anything i can do to fix this with out having to buy another tranny?
thanks. jeff

Why did you do the switch in the first place ? The ratio on the top end it different on a 15. Your B model should of had plenty of torque to handle your 15, Driver's believe that splitting the gears on a 13 has their advantages, it might if your constantly pulling hill's but your sacrifice on flat's like yourself. I have a 13 and I dont split the top on gears most of the time. I know many buddies that prefer a 15 and will replace there 13 when it explodes. I prefer my 13 and wish I had 3:55's or 3:33's, or should I say I will get that ratio when my rear's explode. At 1400 rpm's I run about 58 on the top end, and again I live in the great state where 55 mph rules
.

BTW, changing your rear's ratio is your next step to gain what you lost back. Doing the switching gear's in the transmission is not only the rear section, it's internal I believe, also to gain the RTOO.....

Jeff:
- Welcome!
- Go plant boot in mechanic's backside for being a lunkhead.
- Pull tranny and "turn 'er around." 12th will be about the same as 15th in your old box, 13th a half gear taller.
- repeat #2 as needed!
-
I've ask the same question to my trans shop few years back and said it was impossible without doing internal switch. It can only be done on a 10. If your right Hammer Im going back and do #2 on your list.
-
Yeah, turning one around is in the main, that's why #2! Got to pull it all the way apart again to do it.

thank for the reply guys. the reason i changed it is because the 15 was almost shot. and there is a couple good pulls on my way to the city and high gear was too much and would down shift and not have enough. so i figured the 13 would be the happy medium. i only run loaded one way and come home empty. if the speed was 55 it would be perfect. im in the process of rebuilding the whole truck ive done almost everything myself except for the motor and trans. and the only things im not happy with is the motor and trans hahaha. maybe ill look into flipping the gear so i can do it myself

You should find out what the final drive ratio is on your 13. And find out what the final drive was on your 15. That's what's causing your problems. I seen to many guys just go buy a tranny at the junkyard with no regard for final drive ratios. And than cry because they are turning 1800 rpm at 60 mph.
A good website for ratios and such.>>>> http://www.roadranger.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@eaton/@roadranger/documents/content/ct_062746.swf -
I talked to heavy duty parts in Milton pa. Takin the tranny out this week and they are Goin to make it a double over drive. We did the drive ratio 12th will be were my 15 was in hi and 13 will be half a gear more which should be perfect. . Thanx again.

If you flip the front 2 rows of gears, you will get 0.73 od in 12 (0.79 od in rto 15) and about 0.62 in 13th but it will generate a fair bit of heat so if it doesn't have a pump and cooler you should add one.
