Its no surprise to me that trucking is very demanding and just how demanding I dont know. I have a 3 month old son a loving wife and I want to know how trucking may affect my family. I want to know if their will be more pros than cons and if the money and time away from my family will be worth it to help us get back on our feet and out of the inlaws house. I am looking at starting school at dmacc in iowa next month and have also been eyeing tmc as a start out trucking company I would also love to know what some good companies are for new drivers. I would love a company that would get me home every weekend or possibly every two weeks i get in to see my family. Any advice would be great.

i would think you are in a very good location being in the hawk eye state, being away from the bride will make the relationship stronger, i'm new also, so can't recommend any companys, but i wish you all the best..

My two cents.....I have a wife, a 2 year old, and another due in 4 weeks. I would never consider driving OTR and be away from them. Day trips is one thing, but not being away for weeks at a time.

If i where you i'd find another career till your kids are older thats just me. I wouldnt leave a wife and kids at home for OTR.
That said if you have no other options do what ya gotta do till you can find a local job

Just remember you have the rest of your life to make a dollar.Your kids airnt going to grow up but 1 time..

Your only choices are either go OTR, or get LUCKY having a LTL/Local company to hire you. I've been looking everywhere myself to find a local driving job, and they all require 1 to 2 years experience.

Go in knowing that there is a reason why trucking has a high turnover rate and that for every thread you see where someone is talking about all the money they are making you will find a thread below about the guy making 350 a week. The reality is probably somewhere between the two, but I wouldn't do it if I were you unless you have absolutely no other choice.

You will miss birthdays/holidays etc. Your kids first steps too. A couple bits for you.....imagine your kids first birthday party, and you are sitting in BFE for the weekend, hearing your kid and not being able to be there. Also, your wife may resent you NOT being home to help raise the kid. However, you may have to forego these things to support your family, your decision. Ain't life grand ?

This career is not for you. Especially at this particular time. Don't take this in a negative way but you are going to get home every week or every two weeks and if you do you aren't going to be making any money. Unless you stay out for 4-6 week minimum your dm will use you as a pick up and deliverer of everyone else's loads so that they can keep you close to home. You will end up sitting most of the time not making any miles. They will even give you more cents a mile because you won't be going anywhere.
Do the math.... 1000 miles a week @ .27 a mile! Definitely not worth being gone from your family.
