Although satellites are on the front line, if there is a powerful surge in energetic particles entering the atmosphere, we may feel the adverse effects down here on Earth too. Due to the X-ray generation of electrons in the ionosphere, some forms of communication may become patchy (or be removed all together), but this isn’t all that can happen. Particularly in high-latitude regions, a vast electric current, known as an “electrojet”, may form through the ionosphere by these incoming particles. With an electric current comes a magnetic field. Depending on the intensity of the solar storm, currents may be induced down here on the ground, possibly overloading national power grids. On March 13th 1989, six million people lost power in the Quebec region of Canada after a huge increase in solar activity caused a surge from ground-induced currents. Quebec was paralysed for nine hours whilst engineers worked on a solution to the problem.

Well I've got my tin foil hat all ready so I'm sure I'll be fine as will my ability to navigate. Thanks for your concern though.

But wait ... the rule already is 70 and 7 day (or 8 day if the company works 7 days a week) ... right?!?! So .... then what... they don't want you to work your hours after 70?!?!? Meaning you won't gain hours back?

Its 70 in 7 days. Theoretically you can drive about 13 hours a day max meaning in 5 days you will be out of hours. You can still do your recap but if you already did a reset the week before you will be sitting a while.

I'm a new reefer driver and have only sat around for any length of time (1 1/2 days) between Christmas and New Years Day when the warehouse and office folks are out. I hear that the first three months of any given year slows down a bit due to harvest season in the US. Tax and inventory issues come in to play at this time as well. These excuses may just be stalling efforts from dispatchers, but it does make sense to me. One thing I do is to never turn down a load. Whether it's 2500 or 100 miles, take it. You may work harder on the short runs, but at least you're rolling. I also say, stick it out for another 6-8 weeks to see if things pick up. If you're simply not getting paid a good rate for your miles however, start looking somewhere else. Just don't drop the job you have now until you find a better one. I wish you the best of all things!
