So I was at a reciever over the weekend. Not a very truck friendly place to go to. Basically a jacknife blindside back off of a very busy street into a dark recessed dock. With very little room between trailers. Anyway safe to say not the best place to be learning to back up! I had docked my trailer and was sitting in the cab doing my paperwork when a rig pulls up. The driver starts to dolly down on the street with his trailer not only blocking the lane of traffic but the docks as well. He disconnected then came to my truck and asked me to put his trailer in door 3 ! Needless to say I laughed and exclaimed "WTF do I look like, a shunt truck?" He was actually offended and said thats what he was told to do by his company. I couldnt believe it but he said he couldnt back up and the company knew he would hit something so they get him to drop the trailer in the street and usually another truck waiting will put it in for him. He has been doing this for a week now and said someone usually helps. Well I told him to reconnect and I would help him back in but that I wasnt doing it for him. Anyway it took him about 15 minutes and he got quite a few "number 1's" from traffic but he got it in and was actually surprised he could do it. Needless to say I am very concerned if companies are sending new drivers into situations they know they cant handle and blindly hoping others will save the poor guy from screwing up !
A bit concerned! Asked to dock another driver's trailer

It happens everyday. Sad but true.
Red Hot Mess Thanks this. -
Man it sure wouldn't surprise me! Everybody has to learn this job, what gets to me is the people doing the teaching. I read more and more threads on here about the so called "trainers" out there teaching people to drive and it makes me sick. I thank God every day I've had alot of old grumpy drivers in my family that got me headed in the right direction.
I thank you for helping that gentleman out, now maybe next time he can back his own trailer in. I'm positive it was tough for him to come and ask other drivers to do his work for him because he was too ignorant to do it himself. -
What's the big deal ?? I've been asking drivers to do the same thing for me for the past 31 years. You mean I'm not suppose to ask?
Wargames, CaptPeabody, Everett and 8 others Thank this. -
As sad as it is, least he asked before backing solo and hitting something. Maybe just me but whole time I was learning and training every1 stressed backing stating any1 can go forward but not every1 can go back.

lol!
Im surprised his company would even allow him to ask that sort of thing, and let some strange driver from god knows where handle his load?. weird. lolwalstib Thanks this. -

Good on you mate. We all were new once, and there were a few times I wish I had someone to help me! You probably not only helped him get his wagon in the hole, but also inspired him to better himself.Southpaw7391, Red Hot Mess, Wargames and 1 other person Thank this.

Situations like that you get into into insurance liability. What if his freight was damaged? They could say you done it.
You help your brothers, but you have to draw a line somewhere. You did the right thing.
You say it's a blind back off the street?? If it's off a street, why can't you get turned around and attack it from the right way? -
Ive actually never backed a trailer in my life. I hired an owner operator 13 years ago to follow me in his bobtail everywhere I go and do all my backing for me
