Ive decided to go with the IPAD 2 to replace my almost deceased 5 year old laptop.

Surfing Amazons site all the IPAD 2's I see have IOS 4. Is it any big deal to upgrade to IOS 5? Ive been watching you tube videos on how to do so, but im worried im missing additional something or others by it not coming with IOS 5.

Does Cloud come with the upgrade to 5?

I have a couple hundred dollar credit at Amazon from a deal gone bad, plus i have a zero interest card from Amazon as well. So.., for me, its a no brainer to try to buy off Amazons site first.

Apple iPad 2 MC916LL/A Tablet is the item im looking at 64GB with Verizon and wifi.

The upgrade is fairly straightforward. You will need a PC or Mac running the latest version of iTunes, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/itunes/ -- once that is installed, launch iTunes, plug your iPad 2 into an available USB port, and you can perform the upgrade (it is free of charge.)

I think you're going to be disappointed. The iPad or Android tablets are not computer replacements by any means. I have a Xoom on VZW and my wife has a iPad2. I still use my laptop when working and not just browsing for fun like I'm doing now on my Xoom.

Apple provides the upgrade free, so don't worry about it. Yes, it's always an advantage to upgrade to the most recent iOS because all the Apps will upgrade (for free), rendering your old App buggy if not dysfunctional.

I wouldn't get rid of the laptop though, and I'd get the wifi, not the 3g model to save broadband expense. I'm an owner-operator that has plenty of computer power in the cab--I have a MacBook Pro, iPad 2 (wifi version), a Windows 7 based Acer Netbook (for GPS, logbook, and fuel records), and an iPhone 4s. I also have a multi-function printer. I use the iPhone as a wifi hotspot for all the devices, as well as to make calls, so the phone is the real workhorse in the group. The Acer netbook sits on the dashboard, while the more valuable MacBook Pro is squirreled away from sight.

I use iPad 2 for casually browsing the internet, reading the news, doing e-mail, etc. from the bunk or driver's seat, in larger more comfortable format than my tiny iPhone screen can hope to provide. When stopped, use the MacBook Pro on the table top (I have a workstation in the cab) to browse the loadboards, print-out confirmations, etc., but alongside this I use the iPad as a second screen on the loadboards, to calculate routing via, etc. It's important for me to try and match the computing power of the brokers...

You're better off buying the iPad direct from Apple on-line...

Stocktonhauler pretty much hit it on the head. I guess it all depends on what you are wanting to accomplish.

www.macmall.com or one of the other authorized sellers is not a bad place to look also. The shipping is usually free like Apple, but you also may be able to avoid the sales tax, unlike buying direct from Apple.

Problem: PC wouldnt usb charge IPAD, apparently the USB ports on most PC's dont provide enough amperage to charge the ipad.

Solution: ASUS Ai charger is a little software program you can dowload and install for free on ANY PC that ups the amps to 2.1. Works on any PC for iphone and ipad

    http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/

Ive installed on about 4 different computers now, and its worked on all of them.

The "average" person doesn't know that an ipad is just a bigger ipod, meaning that it is not a computer/laptop replacement, it cannot do or has the power to do the task a laptop can do. If you want to play some games, web browsing etc. go ahead.

seriously? the average person,?!I use it for gps, print permits, post my truck, surf the web, email, watch a movie, its compact and does its job well in a compact fast paced enviroment, and even post on this fine forum! sure if I want a big screen to view, and spent hours on end glued to it ... then a pc would have advantages, :biggrin_2554:
