Ok, on the company driver. Yes then the miles do add up.
But like blackw has posted alot of carriers come in and cut rates just to get the account.
They think working volume is best. Not thinking about running costs for each unit.

The large carriers are all about volume. They need a high volume of relatively simple loads so their inexperienced staff can lead their inexperienced drivers in doing the same type of freight over and over. They are not set up to work the spot market so they need large shippers that ship lots of loads. They also need to be high on the routing guide to be sure they get as many loads as they can handle. They also have a different idea on what constitutes an acceptable profit margin. I wouldn't invest a dime in a business that returns 5% in good years and loses money in bad ones.

Independents and small carriers usually operate with a different mentality. We may be doing essentially the same thing (trucking), but we go about it in vastly different ways.

 

Earlier this summer we had a larger carrier try to cut the rate on one of our customers. Two of their trucks loaded first then me on a 9 foot wide, 600 mile run to Kansas City. We loaded on Wednesday morning and were supposed to deliver on Thursday midday. The first truck got a ticket because "He didnt know" Kansas City had a curfew and the second truck delivered his load the following Monday because he took his load home for his time off. I havent seen them back there since.

 

Getting back on topic I took this to Camden, New Jersey last year. 14' wide, 15' tall and about 120' long.

Thankyou. I have one coming up this week that will be my second superload. 17' wide and 19' tall. It isnt very heavy (35,000 pounds) and we are only going 70 miles but I am excited for the challenge.

 

I found this picture today. 11' wide and 15'6" tall going to the oil sands of Fort McMurray, Alberta. We were on the road 8 days from the time we left Wisconsin till the time we pulled back into town and it paid me as a company driver $2800.00

 

Worst one I ever had was 18 wide 22 tall and 128 feet long grossing 187000 lbs on 12 axles. Picked it up in Houston and delivered it to a yard in Casper, Wy. It was part of a compressor for a pipeline. Spent three weeks just getting out of Texas.
