Has anyone had a cummins isx smoke, its not white smoke either. Cruising at 105kph when u come up to a little hill it starts to work and just pours out the black smoke. Its almost like the egr isn't doing its job or something. Had it into cummins to get checked out and they can't find nothing wrong with it. They can't figure out why its smokes. Sucks it keeps making the tips all black, what a mess!! Its shouldn't be smoking like it is!!

Whenever you get really black smoke, consider
    1. Is my air filter clean or dirty?
    2. How about the fuel filter?

These are the easiest to check on. It is not always the electrical items.

Without actually driving it to see and hear what is going on, anything here is a pure guess, and not just with the ISX (I SUCK!!) motor. Is the power coming up or is it lagging. Cummins motors have gone for quick response, and pour in fuel quickly, not with a delay to allow the turbo to catch up like Detroit. Does the smoking continue (not common) or does the smoking ease up (very common). I am now driving an older ISX and I have noticed some smoke, where the Detroit I used to drive didn't smoke at all, that was pretty rare in any older motor.

I would guess from what you describe that it is a turbo problem. Any decent mechanic probably would have checked the condition or changed the filters as a first step.

You would think so, but one of our trucks was in for smoke and they kept saying it was the EGR. They didn't get to the filters for about a day and half.

    Billable hours after all.

You could have EGR problems today and be a retard tomorrow. Yeap, EGRs can leak, and (contrary to popular belief) fill the cab with delicious carbon monoxide, which can kill half your brain cells in a few weeks or even days.

Be careful when the EGRs are giving problems. I'd carry a carbon monoxide detector in any rig I drove today.

Every rig driver should have a CO detector on board. Every single solitary one.

EGR's sure have been problems!! Ya, I changed the fuel filters but haven't touched the air filters yet and still smoking. It never smokes when ur starting out loaded until u get cruising down the highway. I work in the oilfield so I've got my 4 head montior for CO and ect.

Well, this Tuesday the KW with the Smoking Prob is going to the Cummins Doc to get a new Turbo and EGR. Cummins finally figured out that it was the turbo acting up, an actuator in the turbo is the issue and possibly the EGR too. The truck was into Kenworth and Cummins quite a few times and it kept coming out not fixed cause they were saying its running great, can't understand why its smoking and the dang thing wasn't giving them a code for anything. The smoking then just kept getting worse and less power and pyro was running hot all the time, well cummins did some searching and figured its the actuator in the turbo.

I have had one for well over a year,in several trucks. I wish you could find the chemical color change ones, the temp extremes in a truck not running are hard on the Kidde Nighthawk I bought. The other thing is it picks up and displays peak readings between resets, not a weighted average indicating exposure level. The chem color change indicates exposure by how fast it changes to dark. If it changes in hours or less the problem is severe.
