I'm writing this for my son who doesn't have internet right now. (So don't get too technical on me :biggrin_25526: He has a 2006 Western Star, 550 CAT. After researching a lot he decided on a conversion to single turbo with the whole works, including the Bully Dog Power Pup.

It's been a week of nightmares. Expensive nightmares. The first test drive it was like a new truck--for about 5 min & then it derated. The 2 companies he's dealing with have been in constant phone contact & they've re-programmed, tried new sensors, re adjusted actuators, try this try that. Now it's not even giving codes......OMG!!!!

Has anyone had this trouble & hopefully fixed it? If so--what the heck was the problem????

    Thanks

I did the same conversion on my BXS Cat last summer. I've had two problems that were pretty easily fixed.

The first was that they didn't back off the VVAs enough. This resulted in air back flowing through the intake system when I let off the throttle. Easily fixed in the original shop.

The second problem resulted in a derate and engine warnings. It was a wire that was broken to one of the VVAs. It was a cheap fix, but it did cause a hiccup in my tight/important schedule.

Thanks a lot for your answer. Basically what happens is when I build 43 psi of boost pressure I can hear the turbo "unspool" and I can only build 30 psi of boost until I stop the truck and shut down the engine and restart it, then the truck goes back to full power until I induce a load that requires 43 psi of boost again, then it derates again. There is no Check engine light nor are any codes logged.

I have had it to several CAT shops and even they are scratching their heads. When it is hooked up to ET there are no logged events and no logged codes, however, every time that the truck derates at exactly 43 psi of boost, there is a status flag that is displayed in ET that says "Intake Valve System Starting" but the cat dealers have no clue...

It does this after then conversion? I ask because, while it used to make 48 lbs of boost, after the conversion mine never goes above 36.

I really dont think he did a "full"conversion because you still have an Acert head. He should have done more researching.
It can be done but to it right it will cost a ton of money and cause more problems in the long run, and from the sound of things there just beginning.

that's the 1st time I've heard it needed a different head?????? And are you saying that even if that were done it would cause more problems? What problems? Have you been down this road?:biggrin_25510:

What engine did you convert (bxs-mxs?) To do the BXS Acert to 6NZ you have to replace the rocker box or valve cover base which is what I think 07-379Pete is referring to. They also remove the actuators completely from the jake brake housings and use the injector/jake wiring harness from a 6NZ.

Just out of curiosity why did you do the conversion, were the turbos junk? Only asking because a lot of people think the turbos are the issue with the Acert and in fact it's just the programming. Some guys leave the chargers on when they do the BXS-6NZ conversion and they run awesome.

Thanks for your post. It's an MXS. This would have been the 3rd turbo issue in the past year, so I thought this would be a good thing for me to convert as well as the big rig bully dog power pup....instead this is my worst nightmare :biggrin_25516:
If you hear a gasping sound--it's me going under.......

So what were your "turbo issues"? Maybe you don't even have a turbo issue (unless they were failing mechanically), but a programming or wiring issue. This could be the real problem and many CAT shops have no idea how to properly diagnose, fix, and tune a ACERT.
