Wedge is 100% on the money with google earth maps!!! It helps so much! Plus you can tell what kind of neighborhood you will be in and if there is extra parking for staging or shutting down. Excellent tool to help you out!
We used to use google earth for every place we hadn't been to.

Wow sure a lot of good stuff here not sure if I agree on the companies mentioned are good. It's definitely a lifestyle change that you really don't feel the effect until your gone for a while. I'm approaching a year now and I think I'm going to go up to north Dakota and work hard in oil field and get paid well. My thoughts are if I'm going to be away from my family I want to be making good coin. Although this is good expirence I just want more cash.

You know I've been concentrating on driving....which is important...but...I cringe when I think of the STUPID decisions I have made to keep going when I've missed a turn.Wedge..that google satellite Pre inspection is GENIUS! I've already looked at tomorrow morning's drop. The SNI GPS switches from route numbers to street names and back again with no rhyme or reason...sometimes it's says to stay left....(or right) Other times she just keeps her mouth shut. I've learned not to trust her. They like to provide fuel stops...but today I couldn't get a fuel stop even tho my life depended on it. I guess if you are the captain of your ship...you have to make your own decisions. Thanks guys....you have no idea how much this forum is helping me.
Wedge Thanks this. -
^ Markus how do you like your experience so far?
^How much are you getting paid?
^ What's the most bored you've been?
^ Do you cook inside your rig?
^Was learning to shift hard?
^Are you in auto pilot yet? -
Markus, so glad to hear from you again, you had me worried having been a few days since you last posted (and had the incident)! Ya know, I was amazed when they came out with the GPS units and couldn't figure out how they could get everything that accurate. After I got one and used it (as a 4 wheeler), I learned that they really aren't that accurate and can't be trusted. It would seem the GPS is something to keep in the toolbox of things to use that may help if needed, but not something to be totally dependent on and definitely not to be trusted.
So without the unfortunate incidents, how are you adjusting to life on the road? -

Markus, I begin my adventure as a newbie driver with Schneider next week. I must say "Thank You" for your informative thread (a long read but a great one) about your experiences through their orientation. Your insight has given me a much better idea of what to expect in the coming weeks out at Carlisle. I only hope that my determination and desire to suceed (as this too is my all-or-nothing effort as well) stays as strong as yours has through your journey. Thank you. (...also thanks owed to MickeyRat for linking me here!)

I find this very interesting...the weather report calls for a few hours of freezing rain...so I, like hundreds of other drivers all duck for refuge at a truckstop. My load is supposed to be in Central PA by about 11 tomorrow morning..so, I figure I'll leave by 5 and it should work out. My goodness I could t believe the intensity and the rate that trucks were pulling in here. It was like ants to a picnic....you woulda thought that we had a Willy Nelson concert here tonight. Inside the drivers are hanging out at the shower suite...wait'n their turn. The guys are all normal...red blooded American guys with flannel shirts, camo baseball hats and workshoes. When you see them on the road in their big trucks...they all seem so fierce and sure of themselves...but outa the truck...they could be my Uncle Alva. God Bless America!

Do yourself a favor Markus and buy some Winter Wiper blade for that truck... I did when I drove a century after the first Toyota passed me and tossed up enough slush to freeze my blades. It' s a matter of life and death for me...
There is something wrong when a four wheeler can blind a big truck... -
Will do..thanks.
I am amazed at the way drivers are treated at shippers and receivers. I am used to the sales world where most everyone works with a smile on their face...because its sales. You don't make sales if you treat a customer with contempt. But that's pretty much how I've found a lot of the clerks who check us up in and out of the lots. I suppose security is a big issue...and I have not been universally mistreated..but, clearly they see us drivers all day long...every day...a steady stream. The larger companies seem to foster that contempt for the driver....I arrived at a DC to pick up a preloaded trailor. It wasn't ready...but I couldn't stay there....go find a Walmart I was told...come back in 2 hours. Along the entry of many places are signs that there is no parking allowed....or maybe..you can only park there for 5 minutes. Well Geeze Louise! We have paperwork to do! Can't do it driving down the highway! I am certain that many drivers have abused privileges. And In these days of Homeland Security...terror threats and powerful Insurance companies...they have to.be careful. I always do my best to shine when I there...we"re all human... We all like to be noticed, complimented, and given a good word.
