Um...no. They move in opposite directions: Bridge wants more length, Off-track less.

I stand corrected on the "not legal anywhere". but, 22 states do.well like I used to tell my kids "I used to know everything , but am getting old now and starting to forget" :biggrin_25514: see below. from OLDMAN's previous post.

By sliding the tandems all the way back, when in high winds, it puts weight on the back of the trailer and helps to keep it planted on the road. I learned this from an old timer, who retired in '05 and got his CDL sometime just before the dinosaurs roamed the earth, or so he told it. Personally, in the 6 yrs I worked with him, I swear he forgot more than I'll ever learn. I've also found in the winter it works better on snow/ice as well.

Just to make things clear the federal bridge formula and the state kingpin laws are two completely different things.

the bridge law violation ticket is 100 bucks in virginia. i know because i got one for being at 42.5 feet from the kingpin to center of the rear axle.

This is incorrect. When you slide the trailer tandems back it increase weight on the drives. Moving the trailer tandems forward would increase the weight on the tandems.

What's a sliding tandem? When my axles move it's because my trailer is getting longer.
