Maverick will still give me a chance

With the sheer numbers that they (and the other mega carriers) churn thru they have to make it easier to qualify.

 

Actually you have to learn how to drive an auto just as you have to learn how to drive a standard,has nothing to do with churn.

 

When I pass trucks with manual transmissions on the freeway, almost all of the drivers have their hands on the gear shift. Why, is it going someplace?

Having both of your hands on the steering wheel makes me a safer driver than one that is always taking his hand off to shift or to just hold it.

Well...its not quite that simple my friend.

It can be argued that one has more control of the truck with a manual transmission...and thats 100% true IMO. If I need to drop a gear in a hurry (it can happen)...I can do it, no beeping truck telling me otherwise.

Those autos can and have failed in many different ways...the trans ECM went out on my first Maverick truck (27182)...the truck downshifted so hard pulling up a hill that it put a Pepsi that was in the cup holder on the dash...in the bunk! Scared the crap out of me and I ain't scared of much...I seriously thought I had been rear ended.

Why ride with my hand on the shifter? I just do (old habit)...I did the same in the auto, sorta...I still drove with my left hand.

I'm no fan of the auto's...never will be...I don't buy into them being more fuel efficient either...a good driver can get just as good or better MPG from a manual...but as has been mentioned, its getting harder to find anyone who can drive a manual at all...let alone drive it right.

I'm still driving a manual...and I'm averaging 5.5 MPG pulling oversize/overweight loads in this truck...I was struggling to get 6 MPG in the auto pulling the flat bed. Some of the auto's in this division do get better MPG's than me...but they also have nearly 100 more horsepower than me...and a LOT less miles on them. Mike gets the best MPG in this division...and he's only barely getting 6 in his 2007 truck...the two 2010 trucks in this division were recently turned down to 62 mph....their MPG dropped after that...now, mine is better than theirs.

One more example...my Dads truck...1996 Pete 379 (13 speed)...driven right, he got better MPG's than 90% of Mavericks trucks...and can still use the left lane when necessary.

 

Sure it does, they can lower the bar because now anyone than move a lever from P to D can be trained to drive for them (in their minds).

My best this past week was 7.9 mpg.

 

It is quite evident you have never driven an auto shift. If you really want to test your backing skills try backing an auto with 45k on with a set of spreads.

 

Train on the auto??? how Hard can it be. just wondering ,,never had one
