i couldn't help but notice that all of them seem to operate the same way. i wonder why that is? why do trucking companies have such high turn around numbers? more importantly... why don't they care about that? why do the majority of truckers jump from job to job so much? the answer... because we truckers allow them to operate the way they do. a wall mart greeter has more rights and benefits than truckers do. until we get our heads out of our ##*es, understand that we control the commerce in north america and stand united, things will only get worse. there is nothing that exists in north america that wasn't hauled by a trucker. you'd think that would make us the most formidable organizations in the work force. unfortunately the word "organization" implies a group that is organized and works together to insure their needs are met and respected. it's a horse to water type of deal. why you guys think it's ok to work for 70 plus hours a week and get paid for 20 i'll never understand. braking down my last pay check counting all the hours i put in(keep in mind... that truck is my responsibility the entire time i hold the keys) it brakes down like this.... amount earned / 10 days x 24 hours... $1500/249hrs=$6.25 welcome to wall mart gentlemen. the difference is we get a choice of orange or green for the vest. how much would you respect a guy that works for 6 dollars an hour and lives in a six six box? the companies pretty much views it the same way. they have no respect for us because we have no respect for ourselves or our profession. it's a pretty harsh way at looking at our industry but it's the way we made it. we our the only profession who's wage has actually gone down. we earn the same or less than we did in the 80's. gone are the days when a trucker came home with fists full of cash and lived in the biggest home on the block. united we stand divided we fall. there is a bright side to this though. if you think about it it's possible one of the few industries that cannot be out sourced to other countries. an offshore company can own a trucking company in north america but they still have to operate here. thus be subjected to our rules.
you want to help your industry? say no to team driving. say no to hauling trains for the same or a few pennies more than you would haul a single. stop driving for companies who operate in the shade. start counting all of your hours on your log. do you realize that if every trucker in north America parked up and refused to move for 24hours that the entire north american market would come to a screeching halt and lose billions of dollars for every hour we remained parked. that a pretty strong bargaining chip. i could think of no stronger one... can you?

No, but it will never happen.

I saw a quote in here a while back (I'd like to give credit where it's due) that pretty much sums up what you're trying to do, but you know, and I know, a thorough shutdown of trucks will never work.

"You can't get two truck drivers to agree about the price of a free coffee."

Get rid of team driving? I would not do it, but some sectors REQUIRE the freight to keep moving. Scratch that idea.

Whats "good" for you, is often not good for everyone else ...

But a bad report with specific problems, issues, and bad policies is far more useful than just some angry rant ...

BTW, I don't know any trucker who actually "works" 249 hours a week.

Even Hoffa couldn't get that paid in his heyday.

    ...considering there's only 168 hours in a week. (24 x 7).

If a company can hire 50 driver on Monday to replace the 50 that quit last Monday how can it be a shortage of drivers?? We as driver are not covered by any labor laws. so there are no laws to protect you. thats where the change needs to start.

I don't drive OTR and get paid by the load based on mileage broken down to zones with each zone changing every 10 miles. I add line 3 and 4 and divide it into my gross pay for the week, this gives me a hourly rate, and it's a whole lot better then 6.25. Maybe at my age I should be a WalMart greeter, but not ready for that yet, No,I will NEVER be a WalMart greeter or a OTR driver.

    What fun would that be?...

Seriously though, these posts are incredibly valuable to people entering the business...In doing their due diligence they can read many accounts of what has happened good and bad to people and make well informed decisions...With the resources available in today's world, it's strange when someone comes here with their first post and complains yet didn't take the time to find this place to do research before putting themselves in the hands of 'bad' companies...The information is out there for anyone to find and most people have internet access, obviously those that came here only to complain did...
