On the fence - New trucks, thinking about leaving job

He is hurting for drivers now but if that is his choice then so be it.

I asked the powers yesterday, If I am going to loose the "hood" can I please get an idea of a timeline before it is gone so that I can decide on what direction I am going to take with my career.

Jfaulk99, if it were me, the ecm would have been sent to Haney months ago and the truck would remain in the fleet. It has been paid off for a long time and is doing nothign but making money. The cost of the tune would be equal to a few tanks of fuel. Which is not all that bad considering that the ROA would be fairly quick in both economy and pulling ability.

This truck has not seen much shop time that lasted more then a few hours. Had to wait a day for a turbo actuator that had rusted out and it was put up in a shop for a couple days to get the head replaced due to a broken rocker shaft bolt that caused the rocker shaft to snap which also took out a jake box etc. The saddles for the rocker shaft were worn beyond spec which ment replacing the head. Other then that it has been simple over heads and a couple sensor issues. Oh wait the company shop had to replace the clutch at about 650,000. It was the orginal and one of the springs had broken off and got wedged in the clutch.

My biggest and only complaint with this truck is power. Something that I am pretty sure Cat could fix if they were not so deadset against thinking out of the box a bit on the programming of the ECM. The economy thing does and doesn't bother me. I am not really that much under what the newer trucks get for mpg but I know it could be better if programmed properly. For an 04 with 823,000 miles on it, this truck has far less rattles and squeeks as our newer rigs. The ride is better then all of our newer aero trucks. Getting in this after being in one of the volvos or 386s is like going from a Model T to a caddy. Side winds don't have it leaning like the leaning tower of pieza and it doesn't blow around the road in 30 mph side winds like our newer rigs.

The only thing it needs cosmetically is a new bumper. The texas bumper doesn't do so well when running n soft ground and tends to drag when a steer dips into a frost boil etc. Thus the bumper has had the left side folded back a few times. I carry a chain in the side bunk and just hook it to my pickup or what ever and pull it back out. But it is showing signs of rust were it has bent and is now cracked on the very bottom so it bends real easy now. Other then that, park it in my driveway for two days and I can work my magic on the paint and aluminum and it will look as good as the day it rolled off the line. Last year I went for the brushed aluminum look on the wheels and tanks rather then the all out shave your face chrome look. I was going to do the fine wet sand and highly polish job but I kinda liked the bright brushed look so I left it at that. Sure got alot of coments on it by the other drivers and the boss.

He may well be hurting for drivers. But if you were to ask him, I'd suspect he'd tell you what he's not hurting for is whiners who give him ultimatums about what color the truck needs to be.

I've held several hire/fire management positions over the the years and I think I appreciate the value of having a good worker more than most. But if any of my employees ever came to me and said don't put me in a truck that's blue or white, I would tell them not to worry about it because I have no intention of putting them in a blue truck or any other color. If you're going to make whiny demands like that, I don't need you on my team no matter how good you are but that's me.

The ONLY thing in that rant that you typed that is fact is that yes the 386 does have about 16" more F/A setback and a glass hood, than a 379/389. But other than that everything else just depends on how it is speced and ordered.

Your truck now may have very well been ordered with a very nice int/insulation package, the 386's he has ordered may be a stripped version, BIG DIFFERENCE.

You can order ANY interior grade/sleeper/gauge pak/insulation pak/color on a 386 that you can get on a 389.

Same goes for the front bumper it can be ordered as a chrome unit and the side skirts can be deleted for the alum. step/batt/tool box and exposed tanks.

It just depends on the way it is ordered, I will promise you that you would be hard pressed to find a 379 with a nicer int. PKG in it than my 2010 384 has.

All leather,Platinum int. heated seats, keyless entry, In dash GPS/nav sat. Bluetooth,AM/FM WB/CB/CD/XM. Pl,PW,PM,Full pile carpet throughout, Woodgrain dash and trim on the door panels,Artic pak ins. all power windows/heated mirrors, heated tanks, full chrome gauge pak, chrome front bumper, polished tanks and boxes, etc.

Just depends on how much he wants to spend on you.

Rat if your pulling 100k gross loads, you know that a prostar isn,t built for that.On my birthday I moved into a prostar,a few codes then flashed, couldn,t clear the codes, shop plugged it in,then the truck started on fire, thank God. They had 16 new trucks that never left the yard, all kinds of problems, the trucks where towed back to the dealership. My #1 rule for myself is,don,t drive junk since 08,that,s all I drove. I missed looking forward to driving everyday, like when I drove Mack trucks staying out for 90 days and never taking a day off. I had elbow surgery from, driving junk and now I can,t drive for 4to 6 months. The problem you face Rat,is that all these co.s are buying these light duty trucks, trying to haul heavier loads, then the trucks are wore out in 130k miles, breaking pitman arms, etc. Where a Mack with 800k feels like a new truck yet,but they cost too much, just like a Pete.

Kansas, I understand that. The 379 I am currently running is full leather etc. Very nice inside. Don't really care for the carpet up front due to the conditions we have to work in IE farmers dirt yards and muddy areas around their warehouses etc but I have a bunch of throw rugs to catch anything that gets past the door stoop.

I also understand that you can get the 386s with the same package. That really don't matter too me. I can deal with cloth seats and a rubber mat up front. I can also deal with a crank down drivers window. Not an issue.

As far as the skirting Yes I know that also but they tend to order all that plastic junk thinking it is saving them money. They are also ordering mostly 54 inch bunks. I currently have a 63 inch bunk. It has a much larger bed in it then the 54s and alot more storage for stuff. I don't really need the big bunk with the fridge etc as I don't usually stay out long enough to need a fridge. So I am fine with a 63 minus the fridge etc.

As far as the color, well I hate white. Makes them look like a cement truck. The blues are pretty gay also unless it is a real dark blue. Now we have a few drivers that got to help order their trucks. Fully loaded with everything you can put in and on them from lights etc. Them black cherry trucks are sweet looking.

Last summer two of our drivers met up with the boss in Fargo and they sat down and helped order decked out W900s. A real dark blue with all the goodies minus the front carpet. But then they were dealing with the big boss. I am dealing with the secondary bosses, the big bosses two boys.

I remember when I started, They put me in a POS volvo with a ton of miles on it. They had to get rid of it because it was in the shop pretty much every week. They asked me to swing by the Volvo dealer in Fargo and check out another Volvo. I did what was asked then headed back to the yard. I told them that I perfer not to drive that particular truck, it was an automatic etc. I asked them if they could just find me a hood of some sort. So they got me the 379 I am currently running.

But some here think I am asking for the world. Just asking for a truck with a classic style to it IE 379/389 or a W900 and something with a minimum 63+ inch bunk and something other then white or light blue. The other request id something in the 475+ hp range. Really would like 500+ but I highly doubt that will happen.

Gotcha,,,,, Since emissions are not an issue, have them spec you a Star Car Glider, big hood any motor you want and WS have a #### nice sleeper. Probably do a real nice truck at 100,000

If you ask me none of the 2007 or newer and especially 2010 or newer trucks run worth a ######, no matter what hood ornament or powerplant they have.

I started driving in 2003 , and worked for a couple medium sized outfits (200-400 trucks) On average the would by them in bunches, maybe 40 to 70 at a time. On average about 60% would run fine, 20% would have troublesome glitches about every other week, and the other 20% had days where they could not get more than 20 miles down the road without the stop engine light coming on.

Maybe you're old enough to remember some of the 1st smogger cars of the 1970's. Masterpieces of ###### like the Ford Granada, Ford LTD 2, Chevy Monza and Vega, AMC Hornet/Gremlin, and about everything Chyrsler could dream up from 1972 to the mid 1980's. I think they cut costs in the quality department just so these jalopies could meet C.A.F.E. standards in case all that junk under the hood happened to function properly.

I throw the Prostar, 386, and t2000/T700 into the same category, because I am convinced that they were designed by folks who were at least partially retarded. I drove a 386 for a few months. Not sure who's bright idea it was to put a huge Regen exhaust pipe directly in front of the passenger side sleeper corner. I would think maybe someone would take notice of a 1000+ degree exhaust pipe next to fiberglass, that maybe it would rain once in a while and char the living ###### out of the paint as it dribbled off the exhaust...but hey that's just me...

Anywho the gooberment forced ridiculous emissions and fuel economy standards on the automotive industry 30-40 years ago. Now after destroying the automotive industry they are set getting their rocks off destroying the trucking industry. Pound for pound, although pre 2003 diesel engines were stinky, sooty and smoky, they produced far less harmful gasses than gas engines. Yet in a time where the price of fuel continues to soar, we have to have more complicated junk on these things that choke them to death so they cant breath and run the way they were meant to.

I'm totally with you, I really hate to see the demise of the hoods. I just wouldn't let that and only that on top of the color of paint be the deciding factor in leaving a job.
