you mean run a chain along the side of the rail and then use it as the rub rail?

Like if you're looking at the trailer from above, the chains would form an H with the crosspiece across the load. The vertical pieces anchored at the ends in front and behind the wheel well. You're basically making a rub rail to hook into, yeah.

I was just curious. I figured it had to be done that way either because of the shipper or the metal was too soft.

As long as the chain is hooked right to the trailer, all you're really doing by hooking another into it is changing the direction. You can't go crazy with it, like hook one chain down the side to two anchor points and then hook 4 or 5 chains into it cause now you're exceeding the weight rating of the anchor points on the trailer. Like this you'd have 2 chains to 4 anchors with one or two across the load, depending on how you wanted to do it.

Yep, as long as you have G70 chains, you'll be fine. In fact on some trailers the chain has a higher WLL rating than the rail.

  9. This is a cool thread. I've always wanted to do open deck and would love to buy a step deck in the worst way, especially since I've grown to hate the comoany I'm leased to and am completely bored with what I'm doing. The only flatbedding I've done was when I was a lot younger on the farm. Oh, well. One day, one day.........:smt003
