I've never driven a truck at all, but I want to take the training course for Central Refrigerated in Utah. I get the feeling that most truckers have at least some previous experience driving some sort of truck and it's scary to think I'd be one of the few with no experience at all. Would I be biting off more than I can chew here? I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks guys

My husband was a mechanic. He drove #### near every car out there, but never a big truck. He had a little military vehicle driving experience as he was a tank mechanic during his time in the Army.

He's been out there, solo, since November. He's doing just fine. Enjoys it. Stress level WAY down, anger level almost non-existent (this is a good thing). He isn't trying to sleep at night after a full day of just putting away more and more anger. (Anger at the work environment, not home environment.)

No one is "born a trucker", but rather "born to truck".

If this is something you really want to do, AND HAVE TO DO, then do it.

Getting into trucking just because the economy stinks and maybe you lost your job, is NOT a good enough reason. Too many others are unemployed, AS WELL AS truckers!!

You WILL HAVE competition once you graduate. You WILL have to "pay your dues".

In the end, it's "just a job", that some do for maybe a year or two, or 40, who knows, only YOU KNOW how long you will stay in it.

LOL When I went to school only two of us had had any experience before driving Big trucks. There was 2 failed real estate agents, 1 guy had been in inventory control 2 burger flippers and a empty Nester divorce mom who wanted to try something radical in her life. The rest I no longer remember but my point being 9 of them had never even seen the inside of a semi other than on tv. So you will not be alone in the no experience group at school

Go for it, not many of us this day and time have experience with driving a big rig...

The real question is not the driving of the vehicle but can you handle the otr lifestyle. I look at it with the same mindset that I had when I went into the Army, but other than that if you can drive, follow instructions and rules, and have some common sense you should be just fine.

For what it's worth, that is just my take on it.

    Good luck!

I agree the lifestyle change is hardest but the way I look at it, the worst case scenario is I don't like it and move on..I've always had a strong mindset to accomplish whatever I'm focused on, one way or the other. If others can handle the lifestyle, than I know I can. I don't have any kids, so that's a huge difference. Thanks to all for replies.

Actually it's a perfectly good reason to get into trucking. Nothing motivates like abject poverty, destitution and starvation.

And that, right there is the bottom line.

    Boogers Thanks this.

I was a cable guy before I started driving the big rig. Biggest thing I ever drove before this was a bucket truck.
