Stud piloted wheels usually have a conical lug hole since the lug nut has to do the alignment. Hub piloted wheels don't. Might not be true in all cases but its a start.

Stud piloted have a square on the end of the stud. Hub piloted don't.

Hub pilot looks like it has a washer between the wheel surface and the nut. Stud pilot looks like the nut is countersunk right into the wheel. Stud pilot is rare if vehicle is built after the 90's.

My 95 dorsey has them dang inter outer lugs. What a pain.

I looked a at a '97 binder a few years ago that was for sale that had stud pilot wheels. I asked the guy about it (I didn't think they still made them in '97) and he said the original owner custom ordered the truck with them

hub piloted nuts have a washer on the nut.
Stud piloted nuts do not have a washer.

Thanks for the link. I have determined that I have a trailer with hub pilot, and one with stud pilot, and not inter-changable. Anyone know if it would be worth the expense to convert to hub pilot so that all my units run the same wheel.

how much do you like having two sets of rubber around for switching out?

Personally I don't see the point in doing this. If you break a rim, you still have to go buy a new rim. If you do switch over it will be expensive.
