Why 34, why not a full 48?

Get back to bed....you're about to fall off the common sense wagon....again!

 

hmmm next they will want us to stop driving for at least 10 hours a day---what next?

 

As I understood it when I read it, the new law FORCES everybody -- no matter what, and how little they drove-- to take a 34 hour reset that has 2 consecutive nights off that includes 1am to 5am -- NOT 24 hours -- but a FULL 34 hour reset...
IS that a correct interpretation?

 

No not correct...the 34 reset is an option...you don't have to do one, you can keep running off hours regained at midnight....as long as you don't bust through the 70 or 14 or 11!

the new law requires the 2 periods of 0100 - 0500....but does not require a 34. Plus, there can only be one reset in 7 days.

 

i think that is pretty much the proposed law--still over a year till it takes effect tho
it might kinda put a wrinkle into some peoples routines

 

Don't see it affecting me...instead of resets I'll have a goose egg or two between resets.

I don't know anyone personally with a flat that will get out of bed for $25.

 

All those who complain that 34 hours is too long for a reset, 10 hours off for a rest break and other elements of the hos rules just keeps them from making money need to remember why we have hours of service rules to begin with. Trucking companies treating drivers like garbage is nothing new, nor did it start with deregulation. It has been going on since the very beginning of trucking. In response to the abuses that these companies were practicing the first HOS were issued. Now we have drivers who would very contentedly assist these companies into driving themselves into an early grave. Do you realize that weight issues aside drivers have so many other health issues and dangers that those running the companies we drive for will never face?

You don't have to take a 34 hour reset, but under the current rules you can take one under the right circumstances that just give you a day off. I delivered last night, went to the TA outside of Plainfield IN and tomorrow morning will be able to roll with a fresh 70. One day off which feels kind of nice, run hard starting tomorrow then go home. It doesn't always work out this way, but when it does it is nice to get some things done before going back to work.

 

It's true.Everytime you turn around another law pertaining to the trucking industry is implemented.Stitistics have shown the safety is much better a yr ago then ever before but FMCSA keeps coming up with more and more laws till only the mega carriers operate and force the mom and pop trucking to close.It's not all about safety,it's all about revenue.They'll do more research and in their mind the safety out here just is'nt good enough lets make a 48 hr reset.
