anybody know who has the spinner II for the best price?
-
The full mark of the oil pan, NOTE oil pan is 32 quarts, about 9 more for the filters.
I am a firm believer in changing oil, and it does make a difference in longevity of the unit. I worked at a truck dealership and we had a fleet of trucks that came to us the guys that changed the oil at high mileage interval had a problem early usually 900,000k and those that changed the oil at 12,000K to 15,000K got to sell the unit with 1.5 million without major work and these were trucks that pulled 144,000 lbs over two mountains, 22 hours a day in two shifts.
If you monitor your oil every day after an oil change the level will stay set, when the unit starts using oil that is it's 1/2 life and I recommend changing it at twice the mileage, as the maximum limit. The older the unit the shorter the oil change interval will be.
I was involved with a group of these units, running synthetic oils, and after a lot of testing it was a failure, the bearings showed more wear and impregnated particles, the engines were discussting internally full of a very fine slimy jelly.
A spinner is a great thing, it has to be installed properly, that is something that works.
Just a thought!aiwiron Thanks this. -
Since it is not coming out of my wallet, I guess it really doesn't matter when people change their oil. But just putting out 8,000 to 10,000 mile intervals as if they were written in stone and based on "that's the way we always did it" philosophy isn't sound advice. I am more inclined to take the OEM suggestion along with the oil producers advise on such things. They have put a lot of R&D money into this and have taken even a conservative view on oil change intervals, which exceeds most peoples actual practice which is primarily based on "it feels right". -
As Cowpie stated, most new oil exceed specs for engines. I used ot change my oil every 15,000 miles. My oil samples were great.... i pushed it to 30,000 once and the sample came back the same as the 15k sample. I've been changing my oil every 30k since then and have not had a problem. it has 800k on it now and still comes back perfect.
I would suggest getting a chassis lube at 15,000 miles tho in between oil changes. -
SHC who does your samples?

On the chassis lube, I admit I am a little bit anal about it getting done. I crawl under there and grease the truck at least every 5000 and sometimes more. I did back off of my once a week routine, so I have eased up a little. Gives me a good opportunity to check out everything under the truck in detail and it is an easy job.
NWMAXI, at a minimum, you can get just about any lube shop to run a sample on their testing machine. They are quick and generally reliable. For an increased peace of mind, you can always get some sample bottles from any number of labs and send samples in. Blackstone, Stavely, Oil Analyzers, Polaris, etc are all good labs. You can go online and get sample kits from any of them. Only problem is the time lag between when you send it in and get the results back. I will use the on site testing frequently, and send a sample into a lab once in a while to compare. Most times it is quite close. I have a preference for Oil Analyzers and Stavely. I have heard good things about Polaris.NWMAXI Thanks this. -

But as a side note, what analytical study can you point to that shows changing oil at 10K and the filter at 5K actually increases engine longevity compared to OEM recommended intervals? Just saying you haven't had a problem does not prove that the oil change regimen you are doing has been the reason you have not had any problems. That is the same as me saying because I didn't use a particular oil additive and never had a problem means that anyone using that additive will destroy their engine. It is virtually impossible to prove a negative.Last edited: Aug 19, 2012
