This morning we ran the gauntlet as it were. The instructors set up three different backing scenarios. One was a tighter version of the 45-degree backing that required more finesse and at least one pull-up to get the rig in the slot. The second was a 90-degree backing with a curb stuck out in front of one of the neighboring trucks. Third was a 180-degree turn followed by a blind-side parallel parking.
In the afternoon we received the classroom portion of the flatbed load securement training. Tomorrow we get to apply the knowledge by securing various types of practice loads to trailers.
CDL in hand... Now What ? Decision time, that's what...

Hey Perpetual!
Just getting a chance to catch up on your thread and training! Seems like so far so good and you are getting the skills down! It's good to see you say you are feeling more comfortable with your skills and it seems as if you are being treated well.
I don't understand the person who trained at a school that ONLY taught an auto transmission? That makes NO sense! I know some companies do or did have autos ( for example USX when the ex drove there a few years back but they are switching back to manual transmissions again...) I just can't imagine all the time, money and energy spent to learn and get your CDL and not learn to shift? I guess IMHO I would not have gone to that school. Trying to learn to shift a truck is nothing like a car!
Keep up the good work!!Perpetual and Cascadiagirl Thank this. -
I lived on walmart bologna and ramen for three weeks with an occasional splurge on the weekends. -
Today we completed more paperwork in preparation for becoming employees - W4's, direct deposit info, etc. We also received more classroom training on load securement followed by practical exercises securing loads on trailers.
Tomorrow marks the final day of orientation phase 1. We should find out at that time when we are going out over the road with a trainer. Some may leave tomorrow evening, others on Tuesday or possibly Wednesday.
Everyone is excited to be near this latest milestone and ready to move onto phase 2.docholaday and Wedge Thank this. -
Well it's official - the 8 remaining members of the 2/27/2012 orientation class are now employees. We are eagerly anticipating the next phase of going out over the road with our 1:1 trainers.
